Mason Studer hit a 38-yard field goal as time expired to lift Christopher Newport to a 29-26 upset win at Delaware Valley, while Widener won on a late field goal as well in the bottom-left bracket, more commonly known as the Mary Hardin-Baylor bracket.
Studer's kick completed the Captains' comeback from a 26-7 deficit and lifted them into the second round of the playoffs vs. Widener.
Aaron Wilmer went over the 10,000 yard passing/1,000 rushing mark for his career, becoming just the fourth Division III quarterback to do so. But he tweaked his hamstring in the second quarter and was ineffective the rest of the game, finishing 12-for-26 passing for 164 yards.
Marcus Morrast ran for 108 yards and a touchdown and threw for 216 more and another score for the Captains, who improved to 8-3.
Widener's defense brought down Muhlenberg running back Max Cepada in the end zone for a safety with 1:32 left, cutting the Mules' four-point lead to just two, 35-33. The Pride returned the free kick to the 39 and drove 46 yards before O'Hara's kick.
Linfield joined the ranks of those with big first quarters on Saturday, rolling up a 28-0 lead before the first period ended and cruising to a 55-24 win vs. Chapman. The Wildcats ran their first offensive play from scrimmage with just 10 men on the field to honor the memory of former teammate Parker Moore, slain earlier this week. Charlie Poppen had 10 catches for 158 yards and two scores.
UMHB and Texas Lutheran were in a lightning delay for several hours with the Cru leading 14-10 early in the second quarter before the game was suspended for the night. It will be resumed at 11:30 a.m. Central on Sunday.
Second-round host sites are not announced officially until Sunday, but Widener will host Christopher Newport, based on how the NCAA laid out teams in the bracket.
