Claremont-Mudd-Scripps struck first in the Sixth Street rivalry, beating its cross-campus rival, while North Park picked up a two-OT win, Washington & Jefferson bounced back from a disheartening loss and Rochester improved to 5-0 for the first time since the first Bush's administration in action Saturday among unranked teams in Division III football.
The Stags of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps scored three touchdowns early and then held on the rest of the way for a 20-14 win against Pomona-Pitzer, the rivals who are so close geographically that they all share the same campus in Claremont, California. With the win, CMS retains the Sixth Street Trophy.
Pomona-Pitzer got to the CMS 25-yard line in the closing minutes with a chance to win it late, but Michael Houk coming up with a big sack on third-and-22 before the Sagehens turned it over on downs on a desperation fourth-and-27. Stags workhorse running back ran for a touchdown, the 49th of his career, while Walter Kuhlenkamp went 16-for-25 through the air for 257 yards and the other two touchdowns. The rivals could potentially meet again in Week 11 if CMS wins the Surf Division and Pomona-Pitzer wins the Sun Division of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season.
North Park outlasted Augustana, defeating the Vikings 30-27 in double overtime. The Vikings ... the ones from North Park, that is ... scored the last 10 points of regulation, capped by a Matt Eck to Jeremy Ombogo TD pass with 53 seconds to play. The two connected for a touchdown in the first overtime, and Augustana (2-2) answered with a TD of its own on a Mike DiGioia rush. The Vikings of Rock Island connected on a 39-yard field goal in the second overtime, but Quadrell Hill ripped off 21 yards on the ground for North Park in the second half of the second OT, leaving Eck to take it the final yard for the score.
It's North Park's first win in the series since 2017. Eck finished the day 26-for-37 passing for 256 yards and three touchdowns, plus the one TD on the ground.
Trailing 14-7, Lamont Austin made a diving interception for Westminster (Pa.) to give the Titans the ball in Washington & Jefferson territory, and Ryan Gomes took a handoff on fourth-and-1 and found all sorts of open space, turning the corner and taking it 33 yards for a touchdown to tie the game with 1:12 to play in the third quarter. But the Presidents (3-1, 3-1 PAC) were not down, as Jacob Pugh went 5-for-5 on the drive, and Owen Petrisek went for runs of 11 and 30 yards to get into the red zone. From there, it finished off with Kobe Derosa going the final yard for a touchdown, giving W&J a 21-14 lead with 11:43 to play, and accounting for the final score. Pugh completed 26 of 40 passes for 248 yards and two scores, while Petrisek picked up 96 yards on 16 carries.
Rochester remained unbeaten, moving to 5-0 for the first time since 1992, after posting a 14-7 victory over RPI. The Yellowjackets (5-0, 1-0 Liberty League) combined for five sacks while forcing three turnovers, including a game-sealing interception by junior Jordy Tawa, who snagged a pick for the fifth game in a row. Overall, RPI (2-3, 0-1 LL), was held to 22 net rushing yards.
Hobbart got a stellar performance from its defense, record-breaking efforts from its special teams and points in every quarter to earn a 16-7 Liberty League win over Ithaca this afternoon. The Statesmen never trailed in snapping the Bombers' 13-game Liberty League winning streak. Tobias Wefering tied the record for field goals made in a game with three. Jaimen Bliss ended with a career-high 14 tackles, passing the 200-tackle mark for his career.
Marietta held Ohio Northern nearly 300 yards under its average as the Pioneers improved to 4-0, defeating the Polar Bears 45-10 and handing ONU its first loss of the season. The Polar Bears entered today's game with the top rushing offense in the OAC averaging 327.7 yards per game on the ground. ONU was also averaging 435.7 yards of total offense per game. Marietta, the OAC's top-ranked defense, limited the Polar Bears to just 29 yards rushing and 144 total yards for the game. This is the fourth straight game Marietta has held its opponent under 100 yards rushing. The Pioneer defense forced four Polar Bear turnovers and scored a touchdown on a fumble return by Zaiden Huck in the third quarter.
Terry Hicks rushed for a game-high 97 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback and team captain Carter Sido passed for 113 yards and one touchdown, adding 78 yards rushing and one touchdown, as Hampden-Sydney defeated Guilford 31-0 in the teams' Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener. The Tigers (3-1, 1-0) won their third straight contest and posted their first shutout since March 5, 2021.
Clayton Fogler kicked a 38-yard field goal to lift St. Lawrence to a 27-24 overtime win over Union. The Garnet Chargers went on a run in the third, with a 1-yard touchdown from Cam Fries and two field goals to build a 24-10 lead over the Saints by 14:56 of the fourth quarter. The Saints responded well as Lawther and Baldwin connected for a second time with a 25-yard catch on the 67-yard drive bringing them within one touchdown. Eight minutes later, Lawther found Huhtala with a 15-yard pass. Both of Fogler's kicks were good as the Saints rebounded, tying the score 24-24 to force overtime. St. Lawrence won the toss in overtime and opted to play defense. On the fourth play of Union's drive, Flanagan's pass was broken up by Thomas Our and intercepted by Savino Morelli to put the Saints on offense, where Fogler connected for the win.
Case Western Reserve continued its torrid pace with another big output from its offense and a smothering performance from its defense, besting Allegheny 58-14 on the road on Saturday. Dylan Cave had a career-high 128 receiving yards and two touchdowns on just five receptions, and senior wideout Noah Coyne had a season-best 130 receiving yards on just four catches as Case improved to 4-0. Alex Fromberg completed 12 of his 29 passes for 286 yards and two scores, adding 25 yards on the ground, and Aaron Filips completed all five of his passes for 67 yards and one touchdown in the air and on the ground. Four Spartans scored a rushing touchdown during the contest, including Filips, sophomore Sam DeTillio (the first of his career), sophomore Mitchell Waite, and senior Gage Duesler.
Ethan Beamish matched the program single-game record for touchdown passes, while Zackary Orr recorded the longest punt return touchdown in program history as Brevard (2-1, 2-0 USA South) returned to the gridiron with a bang, scoring its most points since 2017 with a 55-21 thrashing of Southern Virginia (0-5, 0-3) in Buena Vista, Virginia. The Tornados got back on the field after last week's game with Maryville was canceled due to the impassability of roads in western North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Helene. Beamish matched his career high with 315 passing yards on 18 completions, with five of them going for touchdowns.
UW-Stout sent UW-Stevens Point to its 24th consecutive WIAC loss, defeating the Pointers 22-15. Luke Cool handled the pressure, kicking five field goals after a Carter Zezulka touchdown pass opened the scoring. The Pointers scored on a Charlie Smith TD pass to Miles Gallagher with 1:06 remaining and used two time outs to get the ball back with 43 seconds left, but UWSP's drive ended in a Gavin Goodman interception and Stout was able to kneel it out for the win.
Nick Rhinehart connected on a 31-yard field goal with 11 seconds left in the game and Grinnell defeated Lawrence 17-14, sending the Vikings to their 26th consecutive loss, the longest active streak in NCAA Division III. Kean's was the longest losing streak which got snapped this week, as the Cougars went on an eight-play, 82-yard drive late in the fourth quarter and Rocco Pellegrini found a wide open Julian Jones for the 15-yard catch and run. That plus a two-point conversion pass turned an 18-17 deficit into a 25-18 win for Kean, snapping a 13-game slide.
