Ripon turned the shutout back on Lake Forest, while DePauw remained unbeaten, Springfield took over first place alone in the NEWMAC and more in Division III football action among teams outside the D3football.com Top 25.
Ripon forced six turnovers and sent fans home happy from its brand-new stadium as the Red Hawks defeated Lake Forest 12-0. It's the first loss of the season for the Foresters, who had shut out four of their first six opponents. Ripon linebacker Jaden Shackelford had a career-high 13 tackles with two tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. The loss drops Lake Forest into a three-way tie for first in the Midwest Conference, but the Foresters have already beaten Illinois College and face fellow tri-leader Monmouth on Nov. 4. Ripon's win was just the second game in their new, on-campus facility.
Caden Whitehead dove across the goal line in overtime as DePauw rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter to win 41-35 at Wittenberg. Whitehead ran for 130 yards and a touchdown in the win. DePauw scored touchdowns with 6:34 and 1:41 left to tie the game, and in overtime, DePauw held Wittenberg quarterback Max Milton to 1-for-4 passing for minus-2 yards. When DePauw got the ball, Whitehead carried on all six of his Tigers' plays, for 25 yards and the touchdown, a 2-yard run up the middle.
Salisbury won its third game in a row and delivered head coach Sherman Wood the 200th victory of his career, powering through the Rowan Profs, 35-20. Wood becomes just the 12th active football coach across all levels of the NCAA to reach 200 career wins. Wood, who began his career at Bowie State in 1993 before arriving in Salisbury in 1999. Bethel coach Steve Johnson is the active Division III football wins leader, with 249.
Will Bouma rushed for a program-best five touchdowns to lift the Tartans to a 35-14 win against Washington & Jefferson. Carnegie Mellon used a series of quick drives to take a 32-7 lead and cruised to the victory. Bouma ran for 150 yards on the ground and Tre Vasiliadis added 101 yards on 23 carries. The last time two Tartans rushed for 100 yards in a contest was in 2011 vs. Kenyon. It was the fourth consecutive win for the Tartans in the series with W&J.
Springfield stands alone at the top of the NEWMAC standings as the Pride defeated Salve Regina in the teams' first meeting in 20 years. Springfield (6-1) dominated the clock with its prolific ground game, running for 352 yards and holding the ball for 37:59. That included 28 carries for 139 yards and a TD for Arsen Shtefan. Springfield scored the first 24 points of the game and although Salve got within 10 points with 6:32 remaining, the Seahawks never got the ball back, as Springfield drove all the way to the Salve 7 before being able to go into victory formation.
Andrew Puccinelli passed for a game-high 259 yards and two touchdowns, but Hampden-Sydney dropped a hard-fought 21-17 ODAC game at home Washington & Lee. The host Tigers (4-3, 2-2 ODAC) led 14-0 after one quarter, were ahead 14-7 at halftime, and 17-14 after three quarters, but the visiting Generals (6-1, 4-0) scored a late touchdown — a 24-yard scoring run by quarterback Stephen Murrin with 5:04 remaining — for the important conference road win. W&L remains tied with Randolph-Macon at the top of the ODAC.
Case Western Reserve tied a program record with its third shutout of the season in a 35-0 triumph over Waynesburg. The win was the fifth straight for the Spartans, who improved to 6-1, both overall and in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 1-6 overall and in the league with the setback. The shutout was the third this season for the Spartans, matching the 1986 team for the most in a single season in program history.
Montclair State drove the length of the field and scored on a 28-yard Abellany Mendez touchdown run with 2:24 left, kicking the extra point to defeat William Paterson 14-13. Paterson had taken a 13-7 lead when Knasir Alston picked off a pass at the Montclair 39 with 9:31 remaining in the game, and Pioneers quarterback Christopher Leimberg went downfield for Matt Clarke on the next play for a touchdown. But Keyshawn Dixon blocked Paterson's extra point attempt, giving Montclair the chance to win it with seven points. Paterson got to midfield on its next drive, but Alex Buchwald picked off Leimberg's fourth-and-23 heave in the end zone to end the threat.
