William Paterson won a third game for the first time since 2014, while Trinity (Texas) knocked Centre from the ranks of the unbeaten and Albion was shut out until the fourth quarter in Saturday's Division III football action.
Christopher Newport took a 14-6 lead in the second quarter, but Matt Clarke caught 11 passes for 318 yards and four touchdowns to help William Paterson surge past the Captains, 48-28. Clarke, who entered the day with 420 yards receiving in his first five games, caught a 62-yard touchdown pass on the Pioneers' second snap of the third quarter, and added an 80-yard catch on the first play after CNU had scored to cut the lead to six. Clarke wrestled the ball away from the defender at his own 40 and pulled away for the score. Paterson has a bye week, then travels to Rowan, which fell to Kean on Saturday to go to 0-4 on the season. Danny Iannuzzio plowed in from 1 yard out to cap a 93-yard drive with 50 seconds left to secure the win for Kean.
Jack Wurzer threw for two touchdowns and Steven Moses ran for 98 yards and a score as Adrian handed Albion its first loss of the season, by a 21-7 score. Adrian (3-3, 1-1 MIAA) got all of its scoring in the first half, including a 79-yard TD strike from Wurzer to Gage Palus on a blown coverage. Meanwhile, Albion failed on fourth down at the Adrian 34 and at the Adrian 21 in the second quarter, was picked off at the 12 late in the third before finally getting on the board in the fourth quarter. Albion (4-1, 0-1) was unable to conver on fourth-and-goal from the 3 with 3:51 left to go in the game and the Britons never got the ball back. Albion is unranked in the D3football.com Top 25 but was ranked in the AFCA's poll.
Trinity (Texas) held Centre to just 180 total yards and remained unbeaten on the season, cruising past the Colonels 27-7. Austin Bertness caught two touchown passes from Tucker Horn and BJ Stewart added another as the Tigers easily improved to 4-0, 2-0 in the SAA. Trinity broke up four passes in keeping Trentin Dupper to 10-for-25 passing for 117 yards.
Madden Lowe threw for 317 yards and four touchdowns, as Catholic won its second consecutive NEWMAC game with a 30-7 victory at WPI. The Cardinals (4-2 overall) start NEWMAC play 2-0 for the first time in program history, while WPI falls to 1-5, 0-2. Catholic did most of its damage through the air, as Lowe finished 38-for-49 with four scores and one interception. Preston Jeffrey led the receiving corps with nine receptions for 98 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Catholic stymied the WPI offense through three quarters, building a 23-0 advantage. WPI broke through with a 5-yard Zachary Levy run in the fourth quarter, but Catholic scored on its next possession to seal the victory.
Merchant Marine improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1968, as the Mariners win 49-14 at Norwich. They scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and five of their six drives in the first half to go up 35-7 at the half. Seven players scored touchdowns for the Mariners. Norwich fell to 2-4, 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Grove City held Geneva's triple-option offense to 26 rushing yards and forced four turnovers in a 56-7 win against the Golden Tornadoes. The Wolverines (5-1, 4-1 PAC) converted those four turnovers into 21 points and racked up 537 yards of total offense. Freshman running back Nico Flati racked up a career-high 182 yards on 26 carries in the win.
George Marinopolous and Peter Lombardi connected on a pair of touchdown passes and RPI (6-0) kept its perfect record intact, defeating Buffalo State 24-16. The result kept the Bengals winless on the season, as they fell to 0-5. RPI entered the fourth quarter with a 24-3 lead and held on as Buff State scored twice in the final three minutes.
A touchdown reception by Connor Perez in the second overtime session secured FDU-Florham football's fourth consecutive win, 33-27 at Lebanon Valley. It's the first time since 1999 that FDU-Florham has won four games in a row. Lebanon Valley had taken over at its own 20-yard line with 4:36 to play and put together a 14 play, 80-yard touchdown drive tying the game at 24-24 and forcing overtime. The teams traded field goals in the first overtime and FDU forced a Lebanon Valley fumble in the second. Anthony Caserta found Rory Sullivan on back-to-back completions before Nicolas Santavicca rushed the ball to the 1-yard line. On first and goal, Caserta completed a throw to Perez in the end zone for the win.
Bridgewater came one possession short of grinding out a victory over Ferrum, with the Panthers scoring the winning TD in the final two minutes to take it 14-10. The Eagles had forced six straight punts when Ferrum took over with three minutes remaining. A pass interference call got the Panthers going and Titus Jones completed consecutive 26 yard passes to Daniel Lamb and Nic Cook to reach the end zone. Bridgewater drove to the Ferrum 34 yard line on its last gasp chance, but a fourth down pass was intercepted by Ja'Kari Williams at the 12.
St. Olaf jumped out to a 23-0 halftime lead and held off Carleton to win 23-14 and hand the Knights their first loss of the season. The win keeps the Goat Trophy in the hands of the Oles for the seventh consecutive time. Jordan Embry ground out 127 yards and a touchdown on 34 carries and Theo Doran was 7-for-11 passing in his first start. Ben Hestorff and Jordan Bartholomew had two sacks apiece for St. Olaf, which improved to 3-2.
