Hamilton beat Amherst for the first time since 1992, while Bridgewater remained undefeated and Emory & Henry won on a Hail Mary on the final play of the game in Division III football action on Oct. 19, 2019.

Hamilton scored 14 points in the final four minutes of the game, the last of them on a 40-yard field goal by Sam Thoreen with four seconds left, as the Continentals rallied to knock off Amherst 31-28 in NESCAC action on Saturday.

It's Hamilton's first win against Amherst since 1992.

Amherst (4-2) took a 28-17 lead early in the third quarter and the score stayed that way until late in the fourth, when Thoreen ended a 53-yard drive with a 44-yard field goal to cut the lead to 28-20. The Continentals forced a three-and-out and Sam Robinson ripped off a 35-yard punt return to set Hamilton up on the Amherst 23. David Kagan punched it into the end zone five plays later to cut the lead to 28-26, and Hamilton quarterback Kenny Gray hit on the two-point conversion to tie the score with 58 seconds left. Amherst was once again unable to convert a third down, and Zach Weinstein blocked a punt out of bounds, setting Hamilton up at the 27. The Continentals only gained 5 yards, but that was all they needed as Thoreen booted through his third long field goal of the game with four seconds left for the win.

Bridgewater continued to roll with a 53-10 Homecoming win over Ferrum at Jopson Field. Jay Scroggins continued his efficient play by completing 20-of-27 passes for 245 yards, two scores and no picks as Eagle receivers made tough catches throughout the contest. Trey Stephens caught 11 of those balls for 142 yards and a TD, including a three-play highlight reel in the third quarter.

Emory & Henry sent the homecoming crowd home happy. Max Yates had just one catch on the afternoon, but it was a big one, as he came down with the ball  on the final play of a 48-42 win against Washington & Lee. Hunter Taylor found Yates in the crowd at the 1-yard line, and he fell backward into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown.

Middlebury improved to 6-0 for the first time since 1977 and took over sole possession of first place in the NESCAC as the Panthers defeated Wesleyan 45-21. Will Jernigan completed 18 of 25 passes for 359 yards with four touchdowns, while freshman Alex Maldjian had 95 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in the win. The NESCAC chooses not to participate in the NCAA playoffs.

Wabash freshman quarterback Liam Thompson rushed for two touchdowns in the final 5:18 of a 31-13 Little Giant victory over Wittenberg. Senior running back Isaac Avant added 212 yards of total offense, including a 69 yard rush that set up Thompson’s first score in the fourth quarter. Jaheem Washington rushed for 163 yards for the Tigers. Wabash is now in control in the NCAC with head-to-head wins over Ohio Wesleyan, Denison, and Wittenberg.

Hunter Wilson ran the ball for 235 yards and four touchdowns and caught one more through the air as Lebanon Valley rallied past Widener, 41-35. The Pride left 28-14 at the half before Wilson took over, capping his day with a 63-yard touchdown run.

Evan Lewandowski tied a Division III record with nine passing touchdowns as UW-La Crosse won 63-49 at UW-River Falls. Lewandowski completed 28 of 44 passes for 591 yards and the nine TDs in the win. The record was most recently tied by Chaiten Tomlin of Mount St. Joseph in Oct. 21, 2017.

Randolph-Macon amassed nearly 400 yards of offense and the Yellow Jacket defense returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns in a 47-27 ODAC victory at Southern Virginia. Calvin Whitehead intercepted a pass and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown to give the Yellow Jackets a 12-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Bryan Sullivan later snagged an interception and returned it 27 yards for a score to give R-MC a 27-7 advantage midway through the second period.

Noah McMinn had 23 carries for 157 yards and two touchdowns and Olivet improved to 6-0 as the Comets defeated Trine 34-17. With the win, Olivet matches its win total from all of 2018 and keeps pace with Hope at the top of the MIAA.

Buffalo State blocked a pair of field goals and overcame 177 yards in penalties to outlast Rochester in a 13-10 home victory today at Coyer Field, marking the first win under interim head coach Christian Ozolins. Martin Bailey paced the Bengals' offense with 16 carries for 122 yards with a touchdown and also had one catch for 12 yards.

Carnegie Mellon outgained Bethany 138-3 in the fourth quarter and scored 13 points but it wasn't enough as Bethany held on for a 23-19 win. The Tartans (5-2, 4-2 PAC) turned the ball over four times in the loss.
