Games of March 12-14, 2021

Offense

QB Hunter Taylor, Sr., Emory & Henry

Taylor threw for 246 yards on 11-for-17 passing for two touchdowns for a passer rating of 225.1 and ran for 36 yards and a touchdown in a 47-6 win against Guilford. He threw for a touchdown to close the second quarter as the Wasps scored on five of their six full possessions of the first half.

OL Dylan Fawley, Ben Petrey, Chris Jurski, Caleb Deaver, Dylan Gau, Wilmington

The Quakers offensive line helped Wilmington rack up 550 offensive yards en route to its third consecutive win, defeating Capital 26-21. Kyle Barrett was only sacked once in 43 dropbacks and the Quakers held the ball for 34:23 in the win.

RB Shane Welshans, Jr., Rose-Hulman

It was a workmanlike day for Welshans as he keyed a 31-21 win at Mount St. Joseph. Welshans carried the ball 34 times for 139 yards and two touchdowns - and also hauled in a 4-yard touchdown catch - to lift the Fightin' Engineers to 2-0 on the season. Welshans scored on a pair of 1-yard TD runs as well as a 4-yard TD catch.

RB Derek Thompson, Fr., Franklin

Thompson became the latest Franklin freshman to show a knack for the big play, racking up 234 yards on just 16 carries in the Grizzlies' 50-3 win over Manchester on Saturday. He scored two touchdowns on long runs, sprinting for scores of 67 and 75 yards, respectively.

RB Marcus Wilson, Jr., Salisbury

In his Salisbury debut, Wilson tallied 101 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries to help SU take down Wesley in the final Route 13 Rivalry game.

WR Carsen Johnson, Sr., Montclair State

Johnson set two single-game records as Montclair State returned to play with a 41-12 win vs. Kean. The senior hauled in five receptions for 212 yards and a touchdown. He broke the mark for yards, surpassing the record of 197 set by Bryan Scipio vs. Kean in 1986 and matched by Eric Magrini versus Iona in 2001. Johnson also broke Amod Field's 1989 record for yards per catch (min. 5) of 38.9 yards, averaging 42.4 yards per catch. Johnson hauled in a 55-yard touchdown catch to give Montclair a 14-0 lead and later added a 76-yard reception.

WR Austin Rideaux, Jr., Austin College

Rideaux posted his second straight 10-reception game for Austin College against Centre, hauling in 10 catches for 120 yards with a touchdown to finish the season as the SAA leader in receptions (31), yards (438), and yards per game (109.5). The touchdown came on a throw from his brother, running back Devon Rideaux, who spent much of the second half taking direct snaps but completed two of three passes.

Defense

DE Jay Swegheimer, So., Emory & Henry

Swegheimer made six solo tackles including four tackles for a loss of 29 yards, three of which were sacks, against Guilford. He also broke up a pass at the line of scrimmage. The sophomore played one drive into the second half before making way for the second string in a blowout victory.

DT Matthew Willis, Sr., Trinity (Texas)

Willis had five tackles, three solo, a half-tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry in the Tigers' 38-15 win against Birmingham-Southern.

DE Josh Bever, So., Ohio Northern

Bever racked up eight tackles, four solo, from his defensive end position as the Polar Bears shut down Otterbein en route to a 17-7 win on Friday night. That included two tackles for loss and a sack. The sack came on Otterbein's final drive and forced the Cardinals to use their final timeout with 52 seconds left.

LB Ross Valenti, So., John Carroll

Valenti filled the stat sheet with six tackles, two tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a quarterback hurry in John Carroll's 28-17 win against Baldwin Wallace on Friday night, March 12. One of his tackles for loss came in the red zone, helping force Baldwin Wallace to attempt a field goal two plays later. That kick was blocked and returned for a score by JCU.

LB Matt Mitchell, So., Hardin-Simmons

Had a career-best 13 tackles from his linebacker position as the Cowboy held the top offense in the ASC to 287 yards in a 41-14 win over Howard Payne. He had nine solo stops and teamed up on a tackle for loss.

LB Bo Hering, Sr., Maryville

Hering had two interceptions on Sunday, returning the second one for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to lift the Scots to a 13-6 win against North Carolina Wesleyan. Hering also had four tackles and a sack.

LB Charles Sias, So., North Carolina Wesleyan

Sias led the N.C. Wesleyan linebacking corps with his team-best nine tackles tackles and three and a half tackles for loss, three of them sacks as the Battling Bishops gave up just one offensive score against Maryville.

CB Elohim Hull, So., Berry

Hull would not be denied in Berry's 21-20 SAA championship game against Hendrix. Grier picked off three passes, including two on consecutive possessions as Berry held a 21-7 lead coming into the third quarter. He returned his second-quarter intercetion 58 yards for a touchdown to stake the Vikings to that 21-7 lead.

S Shawn Harris, So., Bridgewater

Harris racked up 14 tackles, eight of them solo in a 26-16 win at Ferrum. He had three tackles for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup in the victory.

S Dante Anderson, Sr., Brevard

In the first football game held on Brevard's campus in the modern era of the program, Anderson helped the Tornados defense domination, with 13 tackles, an interception, two pass breakups and a tackle for loss in a 27-3 win against Huntingdon.

CB Montez Archer Jr., Fr., Bluffton

For the second consecutive game, Archer equaled the Bluffton school record with three interceptions. He also led the Beaver defense with nine solo tackles among his 12 stops. His six pickoffs through three games are just two away from the school single-season record of eight. Archer also returned a punt for a touchdown.

Special teams

K Juan Ocampo, Jr., Texas Lutheran

Ocampo made three of four field goals (his only miss was from 48) and was perfect on six extra points as Texas Lutheran defeated McMurry 51-21 on Saturday.

P Brooks Barker, So., Hardin-Simmons

Barker punted just twice on the day, but they were both boomers. He set a school record with an 88-yard punt and also hit a 49-yarder in a 41-14 win against Howard Payne on Saturday.

RET Zahir Wilder, Sr., Montclair State

Wilder jump-started Montclair's return to play, bringing the opening kickoff back 93 yards for a touchdown in the Red Hawks' 41-12 win at Kean. It was the first career return touchdown for Wilder, who became the first MSU player to return a kickoff for a TD since Kason Campbell in 2018 and, his 93-yard runback was the longest by a Montclair player since Bill Harrell went 95 yards for a score against Cheyney in 1955.

ST Ivan Phillips, Jr., Emory & Henry

Phillips recovered a blocked extra-point attempt in the second quarter and rumbled 90 yards for a defensive two-point conversion as E&H defeated Guilford in a rout, 47-6.
