ALMA, Mich. - The Kalamazoo College football team lost a 53-3 decision at Alma College Saturday afternoon. The host Scots are currently receiving votes in the D3football.com and AFCA Top 25 polls.
Down 22-0 early in the second quarter, Kalamazoo forced a punt and gained possession on its own 38-yard line. On second-and-six, Lucas Hanifan secured a 13-yard pass from Dawson Skupin. Facing a third-and-eight, Skupin hit Aaron Zekman for an 18-yard gain, pushing the ball to Alma's 25-yard line.
Kyler Maiorana kept the drive alive with an 11-yard scamper on fourth-and-three. The drive stalled, but Cameron Lewis connected on a 25-yard field goal attempt, completing the 16-play, 55-yard drive.
Alma scored 10 points in the second half for the final margin.
For the game, the Hornets had four drives of at least 10 plays. Kalamazoo had 20 first downs. The squad threw for a game-best 185 yards on 23 completions. The Hornets churned out 82 plays for 239 yards in the game. Kalamazoo converted nine third downs and two fourth downs in the game.
The Hornets were led by Skupin's 93 passing yards on 12 completions. Brayden Ledin hit 7-of-16 for 64 yards while Evan Abberger completed 4-of-6 for 28 yards.
Hanifan caught nine passes for 71 yards while Zekman caught four passes for 49 yards. Hayden Johnston hauled in two passes for 17 yards. Maiorana led the rushing attack with 22 attempts for 87 yards.
Defensively, Raymond Cargill led the way with eight total stops. Bryce Balabuch contributed six total tackles. Jaylen Bowles-Swain and Jacob Hazlewood had a solo tackle for loss.
Hanifan led the special teams with four kick-off returns for 73 yards. Carsen Moat averaged 40.6 yards per punt and placed three of his five attempts inside the 20-yard line.
The Hornets return to action Saturday, Nov. 15, when they play at Trine in the season finale at 1 p.m.
