The nationally ranked Hope College football team delivered a monstrous performance over Halloween weekend.
The Flying Dutchmen treated themselves to a record-setting 62-0 victory at Albion College on Saturday, erupting for their most points ever scored against the Britons and their largest margin of victory in the 96-game series.
On defense, Hope shut out Albion for the 13th time after allowing only 81 yards of total offense.
The Orange and Blue topped the previous largest victory margin of 40 points, a 47-7 win on Oct. 26, 1957. Head coach Peter Stuursma loved how his team played complementary football from the start.
Senior safety Owen Graham (Caledonia, Michigan / Caledonia) intercepted a pass on Albion's first play from scrimmage. The Orange and Blue then went 26 yards in five plays, capped by a 1-yard scoring run from sophomore running back AJ Martel (Mason, Michigan / Mason) for a 7-0 lead 2 minutes, 38 seconds into the game.
"I thought we went out and got the pick on the first play; that was a big statement to our offense," Stuursma said. "Our defense was outstanding. Our guys had very high energy and were flying all over the field, and we played a lot of guys. We missed two field goals and had a couple of silly penalties, but I felt we were in a rhythm both offensively and defensively. Our special teams were pretty good, too.
"The way we performed, we needed it. So many guys played and contributed."
The Flying Dutchmen — ranked 16th in the D3football.com poll and 17th in the American Football Coaches Association poll — improved to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in MIAA play, remaining tied with Adrian College for second place.
Hope's next game is the second showdown in The Rivalry on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 5 p.m. against Calvin University at Ray and Sue Smith Stadium.
"We're glad to be at home. It's awesome to be part of The Rivalry, but the focus and energy on what we are doing to game plan will be the same as last week," Stuursma said. "Calvin's a way better team than they were last year. They've made a similar jump as Adrian. Our preparation isn't going to change."
The Flying Dutchmen dominated from start to finish at Albion, recording their second shutout of the season. Over 54 offensive plays, Albion (2-5, 0-5 MIAA) totaled only 13 rushing yards and 68 passing yards.
Heading into Saturday, only 10 other NCAA Division III teams had allowed fewer rushing yards in a game than Hope this season.
Senior Liam Danitz (West Branch, Michigan / Ogemaw Heights) led the charge with seven tackles and 1½ sacks. The defensive end now has a career-high 11 sacks, ranking him among the national leaders.
The Orange and Blue forced five turnovers and recorded four sacks. After Danitz, junior defensive lineman Patrick Rowland (Lake Orion, Michigan / Lake Orion) and freshman defensive end Jude Osanaiye (Sterling Heights, Michigan / Adlai E. Stevenson) each had one sack. Senior linebacker Bryce Debri (DeWitt, Michigan / DeWitt) added a half-sack.
Hope also dominated in the secondary, intercepting a season-high five passes. Graham picked off two for the third time this season. Three cornerbacks grabbed one interception apiece: junior Jack Jacobs (East Lansing, Michigan / Lansing Catholic), junior Lorenzo Vitti (Detroit, Michigan / Dearborn Divine Child) and sophomore Austin Harvey (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford).
Offensively, the Flying Dutchmen overwhelmed Albion with 655 yards of total offense, including a season-best 306 rushing yards by 10 different ball carriers.
Sophomore running back Kal Motter (Lawton, Michigan / Lawton) led the way with 113 yards on six carries, including an 80-yard touchdown run 4:49 into the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.
Hope built a 21-0 first-quarter lead when senior Travis Myers (Grand Rapids, Michigan / Forest Hills Northern) caught a 43-yard touchdown pass from junior Alex Thole (Schoolcraft, Michigan / Schoolcraft).
Thole struck again in the second quarter, throwing touchdown passes of 36 yards to junior receiver Trevor Griffiths (Stevensville, Michigan / Lakeshore) and 28 yards to junior receiver Jonny Rohen-Blanton (Rockford, Michigan / Rockford) for a 34-0 halftime lead.
Thole completed 16 of 20 passes for 268 yards and three touchdowns in 2½ quarters of action.
The Flying Dutchmen added four touchdowns in the second half, starting with a 23-yard, third-quarter run from freshman running back Trey Goike (White Lake, Michigan / Orchard Lake St. Mary's).
In the fourth quarter, Hope scored on runs of 18 yards from freshman running back Easton Suidinski (Grandville, Michigan / Grandville), 1 yard from junior quarterback Tyson Williams (Hartford, Michigan / Watervliet) and 10 yards from sophomore running back Noah Dunckel (Williamston, Michigan / Williamston).
