KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Kalamazoo College scored a touchdown in the waning seconds for a 30-26 victory over Albion College Saturday afternoon.
Kalamazoo went 80 yards on 13 plays in just 1:52 and Conner Bell capped off the drive with a one-yard rush with just 17 seconds remaining.
Down 7-0 with just under seven minutes to play in the opening stanza, Bell registered a 74-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 7-6.
Albion scored nine straight points for a 16-6 edge with under four minutes to go in the first half, but Kalamazoo sliced the deficit to a one-score game with 12 seconds to go when Cameron Lewis blasted a 30-yard field goal, making it 16-9 at the break. That completed a 17-play, 62-yard drive that took 3:37 off the clock.
The Hornets' defense scooped up a fumble at the Albion 30-yard line with 3:34 to play in the third stanza. Dawson Skupin promptly hit Jaden Johnson for a 17-yard gain to the 13-yard line. On the ensuing play, Lucas Hanifan was the recipient of the Skupin pass for the 13-yard touchdown. The extra point knotted the score at 16-16.
Kalamazoo's defense stood tall on the next possession and on fourth-and-one at the 50-yard line, the home team stuffed the run.
Skupin rocketed a pass to Aaron Zekman on the ensuing play for a 50-yard touchdown en route to a 23-16 lead.
Albion rattled off 10 consecutive points before the game-winning drive by Kalamazoo.
Skupin led the way with a 318-yard, two-touchdown day on 32 completions. Zekman hauled in eight passes for 120 yards and a score while Hanifan recorded 12 catches for 104 yards and a touchdown. Johnson also had eight receptions for 84 yards.
Bell led the ground attack with 92 yards on eight carries to go along with two scores.
Raymond Cargill and Aidan Paquin led the defense with 14 total tackles apiece. Tommy Kartes had 13 stops while Brody Quinn amassed 10 tackles. Paquin led the charge with 10 solo stops and four pass break-ups. Leonard Humphreys II accounted for two solo stops – both of which were for loss.
Carsen Moat placed one of his six punts inside the 20-yard line.
The Hornets, now 4-3 on the season, including 1-3 in MIAA action, return to action next Saturday when they host Adrian for Senior Day. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m.
