UNE retains Lobster Trap with 38-28 win over Husson

BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Lobster Trap will remain in Biddeford after the University of New England football team defeated Husson University, 38-28, in front of a homecoming crowd of more than 2,200 on Saturday afternoon at Blue Storm Stadium.

The Nor'easters are now 6-1 (3-1 CNE) for the second time in three seasons, matching the 2023 campaign for the best start through seven games in program history. With 2024 having culminated in a road win over the Eagles, UNE's first-ever home victory over Husson will allow the Lobster Trap to call Biddeford home in back-to-back years for the first time in the five-year history of the rivalry trophy.

UNE faced a 14-7 deficit late in the second quarter, but Damien Jones' last-minute touchdown run before halftime marked the start of a 21-point Nor'easter spurt that quickly had the Eagles (2-5, 1-3) in a 28-14 hole early in the third quarter.

Chris Lang, who had a touchdown through the air and another on the ground, directed UNE's high-tempo offense to the tune of 314 yards (24-of-35 passing) and 81 rushing yards on 16 carries. Jones ran 19 times for 84 yards and two scores.

Oscar Clark and Spencer LaBrecque came up with key takeaways against an Eagles offense that narrowly outgained UNE, 483-464. Max Clark was 30-of-49 through the air for 389 yards and a touchdown – the lone blemish in his passing line being Oscar Clark's second-quarter interception.

Tied 14-14 entering the third quarter, UNE had the first possession of the second half and marched down the field for a 68-yard touchdown drive – capped off by Jones' second of the day – before LaBrecque came up with one of the plays of the game on Husson's ensuing possession.

With the Eagles facing a 3rd-and-9 on their own 26-yard line, Clark dropped back to pass before being stripped by LaBrecque, who recovered the fumble and advanced to the Husson 10-yard line, setting up a Nathan Delgado touchdown that gave UNE its largest lead of the day to that point, 28-14.

Husson answered that score, but Lang's third-quarter rushing touchdown, followed by Anthony Lacaprucia's 34-yard field goal gave the Nor'easters a three-possession lead (38-21). Lacaprucia's kick capped off the fifth straight UNE drive that ended in points – four of those being touchdowns – dating back to the Nor'easters' last possession of the first half.

Ben Cardoso and Mike Perez led the tackling column for UNE with 13 apiece. Evan Bourget racked up a game-high 15 tackles for the Eagles.

UNE, now 4-0 on the season at Blue Storm Stadium, is home again on Saturday, Nov. 1 to host Nichols at 1 p.m.
