HOLLAND, Mich. – The Kalamazoo College football team lost a 56-21 contest at No. 18/19 Hope Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets are now 3-3 on the season, including an 0-3 ledger in MIAA action. The Flying Dutchmen, now 5-1/2-1 MIAA entered the game ranked No. 18 in the AFCA Coaches Poll and No. 19 in the D3football.com Top 25.
Kalamazoo got on the board in the third quarter on a 10-play, 75-yard drive. Brayden Ledin got things going with back-to-back passes to Lucas Hanifan, earning the team 11 yards and a first down. After a four-yard run by Ledin, he found Aaron Zekman for 17 yards, moving the ball to the 49-yard line.
On third-and-one, Jaden Johnson hauled in a seven-yard pass for a first down. Kyler Maiorana caught a 20-yard pass before Hanifan got the visitors on the board with a four-yard catch off a pass from Ledin.
In the fourth quarter, Zekman caught a 23-yard strike from Ledin. Two plays later, Aravind Krishnan and Hanifan recorded back-to-back first-down catches, spanning 11 and 13 yards, respectively. On third-and-four, Ledin hit Zekman for four yards and a first down at the six-yard line. On the ensuing play, Hanifan caught a touchdown pass from Ledin. Cameron Lewis' extra point made it 49-14 with 11:02 to play.
Kalamazoo tacked on the final points of the game in the waning moments after a 13-play, 75-yard drive that consumed 4:21. The Hornets gained 15 yards when Zach Maurice found Austin Hamilton, putting the visitors on the one-yard line. Maiorana scored on the ensuing one-yard run.
The Hornets were led by Ledin's 248 yards through the air with two scores on 29 completions. Maurice threw for 59 yards on 10 completions.
Zekman hauled in 10 passes for 11 yards. Hanifan caught eight passes for 64 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Maiorana rushed for a team-best 23 yards and scored a touchdown.
Defensively, Raymond Cargill and Aidan Paquin shared team-high honors with six tackles each. Leonard Humphreys II had two tackles for loss, including a sack.
Carsen Moat had five punts and registered a long of 57 in the game.
The Hornets return to action Saturday, Oct. 25, when they host Albion at 1 p.m.
