BREVARD, N.C. – Graduate wide receiver Zackary Orr took the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown, and the Brevard College football team (5-2, 5-1 USA South) didn't look back from there, as the Tornados scored 41 first-half points to propel themselves to a 44-21 triumph over in-state rival Methodist University (1-8, 1-6 USAS) on Saturday afternoon at Ives-Lemel Family Field.
The opening kick was the first of three overall touchdowns on the day for Orr, who racked up a pair of receiving TDs as well in a contest where he racked up 85 receiving yards on five catches. Ethan Beamish solidified himself as Brevard's all-time passing leader with a 21-for-29 mark throwing for 299 yards and five touchdown passes – all coming in the first half of action. Beamish passed former BC quarterback Dalton Cole for the career mark.
In addition to Orr's pair of touchdowns, junior wideout Reggie Taylor II hauled down a pair of touchdown receptions for 67 yards. Adam Douglas added a team-high seven receptions for 82 yards, while Ian Castellanos scored his first touchdown as a Tornado on a 10-yard scoring snag.
Chancellor Lee-Parker carried the rock 17 times for the Tornados, registering a season-high 133 yards on the ground to eclipse the 100-yard mark for the third time this season. The effort marked the eighth time in Lee-Parker's Tornado career rushing more than 100 yards. Jadien Deaton carried the ball 10 times for 55 total yards.
Four Tornados registered five tackles on defense, with Trey Williams leading the way with five tackles and 1.5 quarterback sacks. Ernest Smith II added five tackles and a sack, with Robert Dorsey logging four tackles, a TFL, and half a quarterback sack, as the Tornados as a team stuffed Methodist for nine tackles-for-loss. Justice Redmon forced a late fumble that resulted in a touchback for the Tornados, but the Monarchs won the turnover battle via an interception and a muffed punt.
Orr's opening kickoff return was the special teams highlight for the Tornados. Senior placekicker Hugo Taylor hit five of his six point-after tries and drained a 24-yard field goal, while Samuel Vargas handled both punts for Brevard. Taylor and Vargas split the kickoff duties in half for the Tornados.
Being held in check throughout the first half, Methodist's offense did manage 206 yards through the air and three touchdowns, as Ja'Lon Miller went 17-for-28. Miller also served as Methodist's leading rusher netting 49 yards on the ground. Sajari Love caught four passes for 36 yards with two touchdowns, and Jaelan Pile took a 71-yard reception to the house.
Following Orr's kickoff return touchdown, Castellanos found the end zone on Brevard's next possession, doubling the lead to a 14-0 margin. Brevard forced another Monarch punt, and the Tornados capped a seven-play drive when Beamish threw his third touchdown pass of the first quarter on an eight-yard find to Taylor II, pushing it to a 21-0 margin.
Brevard scored on its third-consecutive possession when Beamish found Taylor II for a 59-yard shot, utilizing some trickery as the Tornados had a dominant 28-0 lead just over 15 minutes into the contest.
BC scored yet again on its next possession, as Beamish connected with Orr on third-and-seven for a 25-yard touchdown, pushing the lead up to 34-0. Methodist got on the board with a 71-yard touchdown on its next possession, but Brevard capped off a near-flawless first half of offense as an 11-play, 69-yard drive was capped by Orr's second receiving touchdown – a 24-yard strike – as Brevard took a 41-7 lead to the locker rooms.
Taylor drilled a 24-yard field goal to extend the lead to a 37-point margin, 44-7. With rotations and substitutions in effect for both the BC offense and defense, the Monarchs were able to strike for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, but it would prove too late as the Tornados cruised to the 44-21 finish line.
Brevard totaled 24 first downs to Methodist's 16 on the afternoon, out-rushing the Monarchs 198-92. BC's passing effort was a 299-206 advantage, as the Tornados out-gained the visitors 497-298 in total offense. The Tornados went 6-for-10 on third-down conversions, and converted their only fourth-down attempt of the day.
BC returns to action on the road next weekend, facing North Carolina Wesleyan next Saturday, November 9 at 12 p.m. in Rocky Mount, N.C.
