Late score gives Wabash narrow victory over Denison football, 24-23

Crawfordsville, Ind. (Nov. 2) – An 80-yard passing touchdown in the fourth quarter helped the Wabash Little Giants earn a narrow 24-23 victory over the Denison University football team at Little Giant Stadium in Crawfordsville, Indiana. 

The Little Giants trailed for much of the game but got a 26-yard field goal from Brody Rucker with 12:42 to play in the fourth to take a 17-16 lead. 
 
Denison marched down the field with a nine-play, 77-yard drive to regain the lead. Trey Fabrocinirushed in from 10 yards out to make the score 23-17 in favor of the Big Red with 8:14 to play. 
 
Wabash took the lead for good when they produced the game's biggest play on its first play of the next drive. An 80-yard passing touchdown from Brand Campbell to Tim Miller coupled with Rucker's point after pushed Wabash in front by a 24-23 score. 
 
Denison had two drives from that point but could not put something together offensively to claim the victory. Wabash sealed the victory with an interception on a third and 15 play with 47 seconds remaining. 


Wabash opened the first half scoring with a seven-play, 71-yard drive which ended with a one-yard touchdown by Cole Dickerson. Denison got on the board with a 27-yard field goal by Daniel Cunningham on its next possession, cutting the deficit to 7-3. 
 
Denison picked up the only score of the second quarter to take its first lead. A seven-play, 67-yard drive was finished off with a seven-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Green to Tommy Asleson. Denison carried a 9-7 lead into halftime. 
 
The Big Red grew its lead to two possessions when Green hit Billy Guzzo for a 56-yard touchdown at the 6:59 mark of the third quarter. 
 
However, Wabash was quick to answer, getting a touchdown right back on its next possession to cut the Denison lead to 16-14 with 4:55 remaining in the third. 
 
The late score allowed Wabash (7-1, 6-0 NCAC) to take the victory and remain unbeaten in North Coast Athletic Conference play. Denison holds a 4-4 overall record and a 4-2 mark in conference games. 
 
Green finished with 364 yards passing and two touchdowns. Fabrocini picked up 60 yards on the ground and a score. Guzzo turned in a career-best 156 yards on six catches. Aidan Brownlee added six catches for 95 yards. 
Defensively, Denison was led by Layton Reesor with 10 tackles. Michael Ballenger turned in a strong performance with eight tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack. 
 
Nathan Hallenbeck had seven tackles while Colton Morrow chipped in six stops. 

Up Next: Denison will wrap up its home slate with Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 9. The Big Red will host Oberlin College at Deeds Field – Piper Stadium for an NCAC contest in the penultimate game of the regular season.
