More news about: Carnegie Mellon

(AUSTIN, Texas) – Three Carnegie Mellon University football athletes were honored with selections to the 2023 Academic All-America football teams, selected by the College Sports Communicators. Senior linebacker Robert Coury and senior offensive lineman Dustin Moss repeat as honorees on the first team with senior linebacker Thomas Coury repeating his selection on the second team.

Carnegie Mellon's three recipients mark the 11th time that at least three have been recognized in the same season. The program now has 69 total Academic All-Americans, ranking first in Division III and moving into second among all of college football across Divisions I, II, III and NAIA.

Robert Coury carries a 3.96 GPA as a mechanical engineering major. He was a 2023 semifinalist for the Gagliardi Trophy as well as named to three different All-American teams - American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Associated Press (AP) and D3football.com, for the second consecutive season. The first-team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) selection led the defense in 2023 for the fourth straight season in tackles (83) and third straight season in tackles for loss (165) while ranking second on the squad with 4.0 sacks. The senior has also forced a fumble, recovered a fumble, recorded an interception and had two blocked punts this season. Off the field, Coury has been a manufacturing engineer intern for Mack Trucks, a subsidiary of Volvo Group, as well as a construction project management intern for Tesla. He is a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, the Sports Analytics Club and Cru at Carnegie Mellon. Coury has volunteered at the Western Spring Sectional competition of the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania. He has also worked on numerous projects, including the Smart Walk Design Prototype where he designed a walker attachment using sensor to vibration motor communication to benefit disabled individuals.

Moss, a double major in mechanical engineering and robotics major, maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA. The senior started in 10 games for the Cardinal and Gray at offensive guard. The four-time PAC honor roll honoree has interned as a mechanical engineer and controls analysis engineer for Lockheed Martin for the last two summers. He is a member of the Space Robotics and Rocket Command clubs at Carnegie Mellon. In March of 2023, he worked on a Search and Rescue Teleoperated Robot project where he was tasked in a team of three to engineer a teleoperated robot capable of navigating a scaled-down building in complete darkness. Moss also volunteers at the Western Spring Sectional competition of the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania.

Thomas Coury is a mechanical engineering major with a 3.93 GPA and was named first team All-PAC. He ranked third on the team in tackles with 63 and recorded 5.5 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, six passes defended, three fumble recoveries, forced two fumbles and blocked a punt. He also returned another block punt for a touchdown and returned a strip sack for a touchdown, both coming against Thiel. His three fumble recoveries were tops in the PAC and tanked sixth nationally. Coury was a summer associate for EY-Parthenon and has also been an engineering/project management intern for Curtiss-Wright. He is a member of Undergraduate Consulting Club, Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, the Sports Analytics Club and Cru at Carnegie Mellon.
