Hawks Earn Homecoming Victory Against Maryville

More news about: Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon Football (5-2 overall, 3-1 USA South) defeated the Scots of Maryville (4-2 overall, 1-2 USA South) in their Homecoming game 28-21.

Huntingdon won the toss and chose to defer until the second half.

Will Edwards 56-yard kickoff began the game at the Maryville 37. In three minutes, the Scots pushed the field for 63-yards to score the first touchdown of the game. During the drive, on the opening play, senior Casey Peppers had the opening tackle to break the all-time tackle record with 311 career tackles.

The Hawks were unable to put points on the board in their opening drive but after a fumble on the punt, the Hawks found themselves back with the ball. A four and half minute drive left the Hawks stranded on the Maryville 4 yard-line unable to break into the endzone.

To finish the first quarter, the Scots drive put them on the Huntingdon 23 where they went for a field goal that was blocked by the Hawks and recovered with 1:03 remaining. Pushing into the beginning of the second quarter after a complete pass for 67-yards from Carson Daniel to Conner Bradford, Troy Garner rushed for four to give the Hawks six. Will Edwards added the seventh point with his PAT.

Both teams remained stagnant and were unable to score before halftime.

In the opening drive of the second half, the Hawks 65-yards in eight plays ended with a Conner Bradford touchdown to give Huntingdon the lead at 14-7.

The Scots wasted no time as they went 79-yard in three plays to tie the game at 14.

Maryville's very next drive ended with the same result, a 12-yard rushing touchdown to regain their lead (21-14).

Huntingdon refused to go down without a fight and let the Scots have the lead longer than three minutes. Carson Daniel pushed 52-yards down the field to place himself within eight-yards of the endzone where he rushed it in on third and goal (21-21).

In the final five minutes of the game, the Hawks defense turned their level of play up a notch. With two sacks, Maryville found themselves at their own one-yard line forced to punt out of the back of the endzone. Tyler England was back to receive and returned the 35-yard punt for a quick six points in the matter of 13 seconds.

The Hawks only needed to stop one more Maryville drive and they did so in four plays. After getting the ball back the Hawks rushed to run out the time and with a Kahari McReynolds first down the team was able to run out the clock to capture the Homecoming victory.

Other Key Notes:

Maryville had five more first downs than the Hawks.

The Scots had 83 more passing yards than Huntingdon.
