BALTIMORE, MD – The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins football team out-scored visiting Gettysburg 26-0 in the last seven minutes of the second quarter to turn a 14-7 lead into a 40-7 halftime advantage and the Blue Jays got a school-record-tying four TD catches from wide received Quinn Revere in a 60-7 win over the Bullets at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Jays had just the seven-point lead as the second quarter dripped past the halfway point, but a 17-yard touchdown strike from Ryan Stevens to Revere with 6:46 remaining in the opening half ignited the game-turning run.
Gettysburg turned it over on downs at their own 28 on a failed fake punt four plays after the Stevens-to-Revere touchdown had made it 20-7 and Spencer Uggla went in from 26 yards out two plays after that to make it 26-7.
After forcing a quick Gettysburg punt on their ensuing possession, the Blue Jays needed just two plays to go 35 yards with Stevens connecting with Artie Collins for 17 yards on the first play and Revere for the final 18 on the second play to push the lead to 33-7.
When the Blue Jay defense forced another quick Bullet punt, the Johns Hopkins offense took over at its own 35 with 75 seconds remaining in the first half. As it turned out, the Blue Jays needed just 65 of those 75 seconds to cover the 65 yards and push the lead to 40-7 just 10 seconds before the half. A perfectly executed screen pass to freshman Geoff Shroeder ignited the drive as he scampered 35 yards to the Bullet 30 on second down and Stevens later found Revere – this time from 10 yards out – to cap the drive and give the Blue Jays the 33-point halftime lead.
Johns Hopkins sandwiched a pair of Andrew Rich touchdown runs of 10 and three yards around a six-yard touchdown pass from Bay Harvey to Will Leger in the second half to close out the scoring.
Revere ended his day at halftime with eight receptions for 123 yards and the four touchdown receptions. He joins Bill Stromberg (Oct. 18, 1980 vs. Georgetown) and Sam Wernick (Oct. 23, 2010 vs. Susquehanna) as the only Blue Jay receivers with four touchdown receptions in game.
Stevens was 19-of-27 for 261 yards and five touchdowns and three Blue Jay quarterbacks – Stevens, Harvey and James Rinello – combined to go 30-of-41 for 365 yards and six touchdowns. In all, 13 different players had a least one reception on the day for the Blue Jays, who also got a career-high 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground from Rich.
The Blue Jay defense amassed 14 tackles for losses and six sacks with senior Matt Dubois notching two of the six sacks and junior Luke Schuermann collecting 2.5 of the 14 tackles for losses. Johns Hopkins held the Bullets to just 139 yards of total offense, including just 35 in the second half.
Four Bullet quarterback combined to go 9-of-18 for 72 yards and Peter Schelling rushed six times for a team-high 41 yards. Ryan McAndrew had two receptions for 49 yards, but other than his receptions of 21 and 28 yards, the Bullets had just one pass play longer than eight yards.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 29 when the Blue Jays head to Susquehanna to take on the 19th-ranked River Hawks. Susquehanna (7-0, 6-0 CC) and Johns Hopkins are the last two remaining unbeaten teams in the Centennial Conference.
Notes: Today's game was the first between Johns Hopkins and Gettysburg at Homewood Field on a Saturday since September 29, 1990 – all 15 meetings since then had been on Friday night. The 60-point effort today marks the 17th game in school history that JHU has scored 60+; nine of the 17 have come since 2011. The 611 yards for the Blue Jays today are a season high. The Blue Jay defense has held five straight opponents to less than 80 yards rushing. Johns Hopkins has won 10 straight games at Homewood Field – this is the sixth home winning streak to 10 games or longer and the current run of 10 straight is just two shy of the school record of 12 (2014-15 / 2017-18).
