NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior running back Kaleb Smith (Rocky Mount) rushed for three touchdowns for the second-straight game to lead Hampden-Sydney College to 38-21 non-conference football road win at The Apprentice School on Saturday afternoon in Newport News. H-SC led 10-0 after one quarter, but fell behind 14-10 at halftime, before scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter to secure the victory. The visiting Tigers improved to 4-4 overall with their second consecutive victory, while the host Builders dropped to 2-6 overall.
H-SC took the opening possession of the game and drove 53 yards on 11 plays before stalling and settling for a collegiate-best 34-yard field goal from sophomore placekicker Palmer Smith (Chesapeake) at 9:56 of the first quarter. The Tigers made it 10-0 with 3:09 left in the quarter after a six-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback and team captain Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg) to fifth-year tight end and team captain Ed Newman (Farmville) with the PAT by P. Smith. It was a 75-yard, 11-play possession by the visitors.
AS put two touchdowns on the scoreboard in the second quarter to take a 14-10 advantage at halftime. The first score by the Builders was a two-yard run by Keshaun Williams at 6:48, while the second score was a nine-yard run by Grant Swanger at 4:41—both PATs by Jeremiah Morgan.
H-SC responded accordingly in the decisive third quarter, getting three short touchdown runs from K. Smith, along with outstanding effort on the defensive side of the ball to take a commanding 31-14 lead after 45 minutes. The first scoring run was from one-yard out at 11:22, followed by the second scoring run from two-yards away at 9:15 and the third scoring run from seven-yards out with just 1:15 on the clock. P. Smith added each of three PATs for the Tigers. It was fifth-year linebacker and team captain Brendan Weinberg (Apex, NC) who led the aggressiveness by the defense with an interception to set-up the second touchdown, and a blocked punt to set-up the third touchdown. The first scoring drive covered 36 yards on six plays, the second covered 40 yards on six plays and the third was a one-play possession.
H-SC added a final touchdown in the fourth quarter when senior running back Jared Lawson (West Point) scored his first collegiate TD on a one-yard run at 3:15, and senior placekicker Kevin Dunn (Farmville) added the PAT, the first of his collegiate career, as well, to make it 38-14. It was a 10-play, 64-yard possession.
AS added a late score with just 28-seconds remaining when Swanger got into the end zone from two yards to provide for the final margin.
Bernard passed for 206 yards (22-35) and one touchdown with no interceptions, adding 12 yards on the ground for H-SC. Kaleb Smith rushed for a game-high 71 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns, adding 32 yards receiving on five receptions, and sophomore running back Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC) contributed 57 yards on 11 carries. K. Smith now has six rushing touchdowns in his last two games. Senior wide receiver David Haiss (Nokesville) had 54 yards receiving on two receptions, while sophomore wide receiver Braeden Bowling (Cary, NC) added 45 yards receiving on six catches, and Newman had 29 yards receiving and one touchdown on three receptions. Palmer Smith added his collegiate-best field goal of 34 yards and was a perfect 5-5 on PATs.
Weinberg had 13 tackles, including three for loss, one sack, two interceptions, one blocked punt and one pass breakup to lead the Tigers defensively. Senior linebacker Garrett Robinson (Culpeper) had eight tackles, including one for loss and one sack, sophomore safety Will Pickren (Mt Pleasant, SC) had seven tackles, sophomore Kevin Gholson (Montpelier) had five tackles, including three for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble, while junior cornerback Jabril Lewis (Virginia Beach) contributed one tackle, one interception and two pass breakups.
Swanger passed for 234 yards (19-34) with three interceptions, adding six yards on the ground and two touchdowns for AS. Williams added a touchdown rushing, while Gabe Tejada had 32 yards on the ground and 51 yards receiving on five receptions. Nick Pierce added a game-high 60 yards receiving on four catches. Paul Massey, Jr. had a game-high 14 tackles, including one for loss, to lead the Builders.
H-SC returns home next week to welcome Bridgewater College in ODAC action on Saturday, November 6, at 1 p.m., Senior Day at Everett Stadium in the final regular season home game for the Tigers.
