HUNTINGDON, PA – Visiting Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead and added 21 points in each of the final three quarters as the Blue Jays topped Juniata, 77-0, in Centennial Conference football action at Knox Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Eagles slip to 0-3 and 0-2.
The Blue Jays scored touchdowns on five of their eight first-half possessions to pull out to a 35-0 halftime lead. Ryan Stevens capped Johns Hopkins' first two scoring drives with touchdown passes to Harrison Wellmann that covered five and 18 yards to give the Blue Jays the 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Junior Danny Wolf and sophomore Spencer Uggla then wrapped second quarter touchdown runs of four and one yard around a Stevens-to-Quinn Revere touchdown strike from 18 yards out that pushed the lead to 35 at halftime.
Uggla added a seven-yard scoring run on Hopkins' first possession of the third quarter and Revere added his second scoring reception – this one covering 36 yards – to push the lead to 49-0 midway through the period.
Subbing liberally throughout the second half, the Blue Jays added a Bailey Finkleberg 11-yard touchdown reception late in the third and touchdown runs from Bay Harvey (2 yards), Aaron Winston (1) and Andrew Rich (11) in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
While the Blue Jay offense was busy scoring 11 touchdowns in the win, the Blue Jay defense held the Eagles to 182 yards of total offense, 12 first downs and just 72 yards rushing on 31 attempts while racking up five sacks and forcing two turnovers. Juniata managed just 72 yards of offense on 28 plays in the first half. Sophomore Luke Schuermann paced the Blue Jay defense with six tackles, including three for losses and two sacks, and added a fumble recovery.
Stevens and Harvey combined to go 30-of-44 for 478 yards and five touchdowns; Wellmann (10-142-2), Revere (6-112-2) and Ryan Hubley (7-101) all topped the 100-yard receiving mark, while Uggla (4-60-2), Cole Peters (4-58) and Wolf (10-55-1) led a ground game the churned out a season-high 260 yards.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, September 25 when the Blue Jays travel to Moravian for another Centennial Conference game. Kickoff is set for 2 pm.
Notes: Johns Hopkins set a school record with 738 yards of total offense • The 77 points are the most for Johns Hopkins since an 83-point outburst at Gettysburg in 2011 • Dating back to 2010, JHU is now 40-4 in the month of September • Hubley's 101 receiving yards pushed him past 2,000 for his career – he now has 2,013 and is just the 13th player in school history to reach 2,000 • Wellmann, Revere and Hubley are the first trio of Blue Jays to top 100 yards receiving in the same game – there have been 17 instances where JHU has had two receivers top 100 yards in the same game.
