W&J dismantles Waynesburg 66-0 in season opener

More news about: Washington and Jefferson

WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Junior quarterback Justin Heacock(New Concord, Ohio/John Glenn) tossed four touchdowns and ran for another as the W&J football team rolled to a 66-0 victory over Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference South Division game Friday night.

The W&J offense scored touchdowns on its first six possessions of the game and established a 42-0 lead by halftime.

On the Presidents' first drive, W&J welcomed back 2018 All-American Andrew Wolf (Ashland, Ohio/Hillsdale) with five passes his way. Wolf reeled in receptions of 34, four, two and 11 yards on the drive, with his last catch being an 11-yard touchdown from Heacock.

The President defense forced a three-and-out with a first down tackle for loss from Keith Knowell (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and Andrew Mullen (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) and a third down sack by Jason Hersh.

A short punt set up the Presidents on the Waynesburg 35 and four plays later Heacock found Payton Saklos (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) for a 20 yard touchdown strike to put W&J ahead 14-0 with 5:46 left in the first quarter.

The Presidents were set up with good field position on their next drive as Adam Rudzinski (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) came up with a fourth down interception that he returned 19 yards to the Waynesburg 18. After the Presidents were pushed back via penalty, Joey Koroly (Washington, Pa./Trinity) scampered 21 yards for a touchdown to give W&J a 21-0 lead.

Knowell and Easton Fine (Eighty Four, Pa./Ringgold) combined for a third down sack on Waynesburg's next drive to force another Yellow Jacket punt.

The first offensive snap of the second quarter saw Heacock lofting a pass to the end zone for a 38 yard touchdown by Wolf to give W&J a 28-0 advantage.

The President defense came up with another takeaway as Sean Doran (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) pounced on a fumble by Waynesburg quarterback Mason Schrenker on the Presidents' 30 yard-line.

The W&J offense marched 12 plays for 70 yards, eating up nearly five minutes of clock on the next scoring drive. Heacock capped the drive with a 10-yard scramble on third and goal to push the President advantage to 35-0 with 8:07 left in the half.

After a Waynesburg three-and-out, Heacock drove the Presidents 47 yards for another score. He completed passes to TJ Troxell (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland), Wolf, Easton Tanner (Jamestown, N.Y./Maple Grove) and Skalos on the drive. Skalos hauled his second TD, this one a five-yard fourth down score in the front corner of the end zone to give W&J a 42-0 lead.

A 55-yard touchdown strike from freshman quarterback Colton Jones (Louisville, Ohio/Louisville) to Troxell open the second half scoring.

Following a blocked punt by Drew Ehrlich (Annapolis, Md./Gilman School), Sean Disbrow (Sykesville, Md./Liberty) converted a 22 yard field goal to make it 52-0 Presidents with 3:47 remaining in the third quarter.

Ehrlich jumped in front of a Tyler Raines pass and returned it 39 yards for a touchdown to extend W&J's advantage to 59-0 with 2:17 left in the third.

W&J concluded the scoring late in the fourth when Donavin Chambers (Ellwood City, Pa./Lincoln) found the end zone from 10 yards out with 3:03 to play.

The Presidents dominated in all three phases of the game as they recorded their first shutout of the Yellow Jackets since 2017, which was a 42-0 win.

The W&J offense finished with 479 total yards (307 passing, 172 rushing). The W&J defense limited Waynesburg to just 165 yards of total offense (106 passing, 59 rushing). The Presidents forced four turnovers, recorded six sacks, scored a defensive touchdown and blocked a punt in the victory.

Jones finished with 99 yards passing and a touchdown in relief of Heacock. Six different Presidents rushed at least four times. Chambers, Heacock and Koroly all found the end zone on the ground. Wolf finished with eight catches for 112 receiving yards and two scores. Troxell had 82 yards on three catches and a score.

Defensively, Justin Johns (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) led W&J with a team-high 10 stops. Ehrlich added six stops in addition to his pick six and blocked punt.

W&J hosts Geneva College in a PAC crossover matchup on Thursday, April 1 at Cameron Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
