More news about: Washington U.

Waukesha, Wis., Nov. 16, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis football team sent head coach Larry Kindbom into retirement with a 62-14 victory at Carroll University Saturday in Waukesha, Wis.

Kindbom concludes his career with a 220-149-1 (.596) overall record in 37 seasons as a head coach, including a 192-119 (.617) record in 31 seasons at WashU.

"I thought we came out today the way we practiced all week. We ran the ball well and the defense played really good football," Kindbom said. "It was a perfect final game as a senior with my family and so many alums that came back representing all generations.

To have my former boss John Schael and current AD Anthony J. Azama there was very special. To be able to thank John Schael for giving me a chance 31 years ago – I am very thankful for that."

Senior quarterback Johnny Davidson completed 25-of-32 passes for 296 yards and three touchdowns in his final game as a Bear. Davidson concludes his four-year career with 7,400 yards, second most in school history.

WashU jumped out to a 17-0 lead after one quarter. Senior running back John Fisher had a one-yard TD run and a sophomore tight end Luke Wilkin added a 30-yard TD reception.

Sophomore wide receiver Jared Harrison had a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter and freshman Chris Vartanian kicked a career-long 47-yarder to make it 34-7 at half.

The defense took over in the second half as sophomore linebacker John Christensen had a fumble recovery for a TD and senior linebacker Matt Giles had a 12-yard interception return for a TD in the fourth.

Senior tight end Bouldin Heistand added a 46-yard touchdown reception, the first of his career, from junior QB Tim Tague to round out the scoring.

WashU totaled 550 yards of total offense, second most of the season, and had a season-high 192 rushing yards. Junior running Emmanuel Ebirim led the rushing attack with 61 yards, while Fisher had 52 yards in his final game. Senior wide receiver Mitchel Groen made five catches for 36 yards and went over 1,000 receiving yards in his career.

Sophomore defensive back JT Streepy recorded a season-high 11 tackles, while senior linebacker Jeff Gurley had eight tackles, including four tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble.

WashU concludes the 2019 season with a 7-3 overall record and a 6-3 mark in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW), while Carroll had its season come to an end with a 2-8 record and 1-8 in the CCIW.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU has won both all-time meetings with Carroll … The Class of 2019 posted an overall record of 26-14 (.650) in four seasons … WashU's defense had 10 tackles for loss and four sacks in the win.
