PITTSFORD, NY -- The College at Brockport football team posted nine sacks and held host St. John Fisher College to -3 yards rushing on the ground as the Golden Eagles won their third straight Courage Bowl 17-0 on Saturday night at Growney Stadium. The contest was also the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams.
Brockport, which is receiving votes in the D3football.com National Poll, has now won four straight games and improved to 4-1 overall (1-0 Empire 8). Fisher has now lost two in a row and saw its record fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the E8. Brockport now holds a 17-8 advantage in the all-time series against Fisher. Brockport returns to action back at home on Saturday when they host Hartwick College for Empire 8 Conference action at 12 p.m.
Brockport senior linebacker Alex West totaled 2.5 sacks and also added seven tackles, while Andrew Covais posted a team-high eight tackles, one sack and one pass breakup. Lawrence Jenkins tied Covais for the team lead with eight tackles and he also added a half sack.
Freshman quarterback Freddy June carried the ball 13 times for 54 yards and a score. He also added eight completions for 98 yards through the air. Jala Coad led the ground game with 24 carries for 75 yards and a TD. Imhotep Cromer led the receivers with three catches for 57 yards, including a game-high 40 yard reception.
Brockport got the scoring started when Jala Coad punched in a two-yard TD run to cap an 11 play, 41 yard scoring drive to help the Golden Eagles strike first at 5:26 of the first quarter. Brockport was the beneficiary of an early special teams take away, causing a fumble and recovering it on a punt return to help set up the first score of the day.
Brockport kicker Dustin Moyle got the Brockport scoring started in the second quarter when he converted on a 23 yard field goal at 14:13 to help push the Golden Eagle lead to double digits, 10-0.
Freshman Freddy June put an exclamation point on a dominating first half when he scampered 34 yards for the score with just 34 seconds left before the half to give the visitors a 17-0 lead through 30 minutes of action. The Brockport defense caused three turnovers and held the Cardinals to just 58 total yards of offense in the first half.
Both teams were held scoreless in the second half and the Golden Eagles came away with a 17 point victory.
Alaan Montgomery posted six tackles and intercepted a pass to go along with one pass break up for Brockport. Allassane Coulibaly and Ben Marshall each added seven tackles. Coulibaly also posted one sack. Freshman cornerback Raylens Boutin filled up the stat sheet once again as he posted one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and broke up three passes.
Fisher freshman quarterback Hunter Walsh completed 17-of-33 passes for 138 yards and one interception. Walsh was under duress all afternoon and the Brockport defense kept the pressure coming as it totaled nine sacks. Will Blake was the most popular target for Walsh as he tallied seven grabs for 52 yards.
Fisher's Justin Wheeler led the Cardinals with nine tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss. Cameron Bellino posted seven tackles, one interception and one pass breakup.
Brockport's ground game and strong defensive effort helped the Golden Eagles control the clock once again. Brockport had the ball on offense for 32:42, compared to Fisher's 27:18. Brockport was also a perfect 2-for-2 in the red zone and the Golden Eagle defense did not allow a single red zone chance for the home team.
The Courage Bowl has grown into one of Camp Good Days' largest fundraisers since its inception in 2004. Each year, St. John Fisher and Brockport square off in a Division III football game to benefit Camp Good Days. Prior to Brockport, the University of Rochester and Alfred University had been opponents of St. John Fisher in The Courage Bowl.
For the game, Camp Good Days selects honorary coaches and cheerleaders for both teams. These are Camp Good Days campers who have been diagnosed with cancer and would normally not be allowed to participate in a real football game. The Camp Good Days Courage Bowl gives these campers that opportunity. At the conclusion of the Courage Bowl, the Teddi Trophy, named in memory of Teddi Mervis, Gary Mervis' daughter and the inspiration behind Camp Good Days, will be presented, which will later be inscribed with the date of the game, final score of the game, names of the six Honorary Coaches and the names of one player from each team who displays exceptional leadership and sportsmanship.
