Chimera Names Harrison Green Johns Hopkins' Defensive Coordinator

More news about: Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, MD – Greg Chimera, the James F. Margraff head coach of football, announced the appointment of Harrison Green as the Johns Hopkins defensive coordinator today.  Green replaces Mickey Rehring, who held the position for the last five years and was named the head coach at SUNY Maritime on February 25.

Green recently completed his first season at Johns Hopkins and coached the Blue Jay defensive backs while also serving as the special teams coordinator.  He has also been actively involved in recruiting Johns Hopkins' in-coming recruiting class.

"Harrison has quickly proven to be a rising star in our profession and in just one year has already had a positive impact on our program," Chimera noted.  "We have been and always will be a defense first football team.  There is a strong and proud tradition associated with the Johns Hopkins defense and I look forward to the leadership Harrison will provide on that side of the ball."

Green helped lead Johns Hopkins to a 12-2 record, a 10th straight Centennial Conference title and the program's first appearance in the NCAA Semifinals in 2018.  The Blue Jays rebounded from an early-season loss to win 11 consecutive games en route to their appearance in the final four.

Under Green's direction, two Johns Hopkins defensive backs earned First Team All-Centennial Conference honors in 2018 as senior Addison Quinones and sophomore Macauley Kilbane both earned top honors.  They helped fuel a pass defense that allowed an average of just 191.6 yards per game; the opposition also completed just 51% of its pass attempts, the lowest completion percentage allowed by Johns Hopkins since 2011.

In addition to his efforts with the Johns Hopkins defense, Green also directed a special teams unit that produced a First Team All-Centennial punter in senior Brandon Hong-Dominguez and allowed an average of just 5.3 yards per punt return and 17.6 yards per kickoff return.

Green originally came to Johns Hopkins after spending the 2017 season as a graduate assistant at FIU under the direction of head coach Butch Davis.  There, he coached the team's safeties and was heavily involved with the Panthers' special teams units.  Green helped guide the Panthers to an 8-5 record and an appearance in the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl.  The eight wins tied the program record and the bowl game was the third in school history.

Prior to his one year at FIU, Green spent two seasons at both SMU (2015, 2016) and the University of South Alabama (2013, 2014).

At SMU, Green worked with the linebackers (2015) and defensive line (2016); one of his players, defensive end Justin Lawler, was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 2018.  He had previously spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons at South Alabama working with the offensive and defensive lines.

A 2013 graduate of Penn State University, Green got his introduction to coaching under then Nittany Lion head coach Bill O'Brien.  Green served as a recruiting specialist on O'Brien's staff during his final year in school

Green graduated from Penn State with a degree in accounting; he later earned a master's degree in humanities from SMU in 2016.
