Senior McCoy Scott returned an interception 60 yards for a touchdown to help the Nichols College football team to a 23-15 win over Becker College Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Alumni Field.
Junior signal caller Michael Pina tossed for 140 yards and pair of touchdowns – both to freshman Hunter Ferreira – while senior Jacob Duffrene rushed for 140 yards, giving him two 100-yard games in his last three outings. Scott, meanwhile, finished with seven tackles, one sack, and one pass breakup while Ferreira's four receptions led all student-athletes.
Ferreira's 31-yard touchdown reception 2:26 into the contest staked the Bison (4-3, 2-1 CCC) to a 7-0 lead. On the next play from scrimmage, Becker (0-6, 0-2 CCC) junior Jake McHugh hooked up with freshman Marc O'Neal for a 93-yard touchdown that knotted the score at seven.
In the third, freshman Daniel Espinosa capped a nine-play, 42-yard drive with a 17-yard field goal to put NC back on top, 10-7. Four minutes later, Scott intercepted sophomore QB Alpha Barry and scampered 60 yards to extend the Bison lead to 16-7 (PAT failed).
Following a 66-yard run by Duffrene, Ferreira hauled in his second TD reception of the afternoon from four yards out as NC pushed its lead to 23-7 with 5:32 remaining. O'Neil's second scoring catch of the day on the ensuing drive capped the scoring.
Three things you need to know...
-Today's game marked the sixth all-time meeting between Becker and Nichols. The Bison have won two of the last three and lead the series, 4-2.
-The Bison's 4-3 record is their best through seven games since the 2007 season, when they were 5-2 under head coach Bill Carven.
-Scotts interception return was the fifth-longest in program history.
