Salve Regina runs past UNE, 33-10

BIDDEFORD, Maine. – The Salve Regina University football team ran to a 33-10 victory over the University of New England on a wet and windy day at UNE Blue Storm Stadium on Saturday. The Seahawks improve to 5-3 overall and 3-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play, while the Nor'easters fall to 1-6 and 1-4 in the league.

After mishandling the opening snap of the game, UNE recovered with a nine-play, 72 yard drive to take an early 6-0 lead. Brian Peters found Eric Langland for a 35-yard touchdown. Robert Inniss Jr. nearly ran in for the conversion but was stopped just at the goal line.

Offense was tough to come by for each team early and the Nor'easters held Salve Regina to three-and-out on the first three drives of the game. The Seahawks scored a touchdown just as time expired in the first quarter as Ronnie Martin rushed in for his first of three scores.

Martin extended the lead to 14-6 with 9:03 to play in the second with a five-yard touchdown. UNE used the ground game to get deep in Salve Regina territory next time out, but were stalled on fourth down. Joey Mauriello took the next play in from 77 yards out for the Seahawks as the visitors went into the half ahead 21-6.

Martin took the opening play of the second half in for a 60-yard touchdown, but Salve Regina missed the extra point. The Nor'easters were once again able to put together a long drive. Haelin Roberts caught passes of 19 and 10 yards to help UNE get to the opponent's 16-yard line before another fourth-down try fell short.

The Nor'easters had a few defensive plays go their way near the end of the third quarter. Tyler McGovern looked like he had a touchdown pass to Brendan Nunes until the ball was fumbled near the goal line and went out of the endzone for a UNE touchback. UNE was unable to make anything of the opportunity.

Mauriello extended the Seahawk lead to 33-6 with a touchdown with 34 seconds left in the third, but a botched extra point was returned 98-yards by Keagan Stanton-Meas to give the Nor'easters two points. UNE added another two points in the fourth as DJ James tackled Mauriello in the end zone for a safety.

Peters finished with 116 yards through the air. Roberts caught three passes for 32 yards. Devon Charles ran 33 times for 80 yards.

The Seahawks did most of their damage on the ground with 311 yards on the day. Mauriello had 177, while Martin added 144.

James led the UNE defense with eight tackles, including two for a loss. Joe Kucky added seven while Owen Berry and Danny Parker each had five stops.

The Nor'easters visit Becker on Saturday, Nov. 3 for their final road game of the year. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
