GETTYSBURG, PA – Senior running back Stuart Walters rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns and accounted for 179 all-purpose yards and three overall touchdowns to lift 23rd-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 51-14 in at Gettysburg Saturday afternoon. The win, the fifth straight for the Blue Jays this season and 28th straight in the month of October, improves Hopkins' record to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the Centennial, while the Bullets slip to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the Centennial.
The Blue Jays led 13-0 at the end of the first quarter on the strength of two scoring drives that totaled just six plays and needed less than 90 seconds.
After trading possessions to open the game, the Blue Jays took over at their own 32. After an incomplete pass and a false start, junior David Tammaro hit Walters on a perfectly executed screen pass and Walters went 73 yards to open the scoring and give JHU a 6-0 lead.
The six-point lead was 13 by the end of the period after the Blue Jay defense forced a Gettysburg punt deep in its own territory that set Hopkins up at the Bullet 43-yard line. Four-plays, including three straight completions to senior Luke McFadden, later and the Blue Jays had their 13-0 lead. Tammaro capped the quick drive with an 11-yard strike to McFadden at the pylon.
The Bullets sliced the deficit to 13-7 early in the second quarter as Andrew Howard burst through the line on a third-and two from the Gettysburg 41 and raced to the end zone. Howard racked up 94 first-half rushing yards with 59 on the one scoring run.
Johns Hopkins would tack on another Walters touchdown – a one-yard run with 5:28 left in the first half – to grab a 20-7 halftime lead.
Any hopes for a Gettysburg comeback were dashed early in the second half as the Blue Jay defense forced a pair of quick three-and-outs and the Blue Jay offense scored three, third-quarter touchdowns to push the margin to 41-7 at the end of the period.
Walters scored his third touchdown of the game on Hopkins' first play of the second half as he went 34 yards for his third score of the game after Zac Fernandez returned a Gettysburg punt to the Bullet 34. The touchdown was also the 50th of Walters's career.
A one-yard run by Hogan Irwin and a Harrison Wellmann 29-yard touchdown reception accounted for Hopkins' other third-quarter scores. The touchdown for Wellmann was the first of his career.
Gettysburg got a short scoring run from Mike Welsh to cut the margin to 41-14 before Nick Leongas added a four-yard touchdown run of his own and Mike Eberle added a 32-yard field goal to close out the scoring.
Walters' 138-yard rushing effort was the second-best total of his career and powered a 224-yard rushing performance for the Blue Jays. Tammaro was 14-of-19 for 247 yards and three touchdowns and Ryan Hubley had a team-high five receptions for 69 yards.
Defensively, the Blue Jays were led by Anthony Davidson, Addison Quinones and Robert Fletcher, who all posted seven tackles; the Johns Hopkins defense also collected five sacks in the victory.
Howard finished with a team-high 119 rushing yards and the one touchdown to lead Gettysburg offensively. Welsh was 13-of-31 for 168 yards and threw one interception in the loss.
Welsh's interception came on the final play of the game as Gettysburg was driving late. Junior cornerback Patrick Kelly intercepted the ball at the goal line and returned it 90 yards before Welsh tackled him. The 90-yard return is the longest in Johns Hopkins history.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 27 when the Blue Jays welcome Muhlenberg to Homewood Field for a key Centennial Conference game against the Mules (2 pm).
Notes: Walters joins Andrew Kase (2006-09) as the only Johns Hopkins players to score 50 career touchdowns – Kase holds the school record with 51 career TDs • Walters also became the fifth player in school history to top 4,000 career all-purpose yards as his 211 today give him 4,145 • This is the fourth time this season the Blue Jays have topped the 50-point mark • Tammaro's three touchdown passes give him 45 in his career, which ties him with Mark Campbell (1982-85) for fourth in school history.
