UMHB cruises past Belhaven 45-7

Belton, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team exploded for 28 second-quarter points and never looked back as the top-ranked Cru rolled to a 45-7 victory over Belhaven University Saturday in Belton. UMHB improves to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the program's 22nd consecutive win. The Blazers drop to 1-6 overall and 0-6 in the ASC with the loss. The Cru has also won five straight meetings with Belhaven.

 

UMHB opened the scoring with Byron Proctor's 34-yard touchdown run with 9:35 remaining in the first quarter. John Mowery kicked a 31-yard field goal with 32 seconds left in the period to make it 10-0 Cru after one quarter. UMHB would break it open in the second quarter. Kyle Josey hit T.J. Josey with a 38-yard touchdown strike and Carl Robinson III added a 23-yard scoring toss to Bryce Wilkerson. Kris Brown returned an interception 40 yards for his third defensive touchdown of the year and Olan Vining added a 10-yard touchdown scamper to make it 38-0 UMHB at halftime. Robinson added a six-yard scoring run late in the third quarter to push it to a 45-0 UMHB advantage. Belhaven finally scored on Hunter McEachern's five-yard touchdown pass to LaMarcus Caradine with 10:14 left in the game.

 

The UMHB defense held the Blazers to six yards rushing and 260 yards of total offense in the game. The Cru added four sacks and forced two turnovers while holding Belhaven to 3 of 20 on third downs and 4-9 on fourth down conversions. UMHB ran for 212 yards and rolled up 392 yards despite starting five first-half drives on the Belhaven side of the field.

 

Proctor posted the first 100-yard rushing day of his Cru career with 132 yards on 20 carries. Vining added 47 yards and a TD as UMHB played without leading rusher Markeith Miller. Robinson was 5-8 passing for 91 yards and a TD and Jones was 8-12 for 89 yards and a score. Wilkerson caught four passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Justis Kelly and Tevin Jones topped the Cru defense with nine tackles apiece and Ajay Fanene had two sacks.

 

McEachern was 29-52 passing for Belhaven for 229 yards and a touchdown. Marquis Hedge caught seven passes for 39 yards and Kyky Austin added five grabs for a team-best 67 yards. Denarrius Noel led the Blazers defense with eight tackles and David Hudson had seven stops.

 

The Cru returns to the road for the next two games. That road swing opens with a 2:00 PM kickoff at McMurry University (2-5, 2-4 ASC) next Saturday in Abilene. This will be UMHB's first game at Wilford Moore Stadium since the 2010 season.
