ELMHURST, Ill. – The Olivet College football team defeated Elmhurst (Ill.) College, 26-20, today at Langhorst Field in Elmhurst, Illinois.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After one quarter, the Comets led 6-0 behind a pair of field goals by sophomore Douglas Pollard. The first one was from 37 yards out and the second was from 25 yards.
  • Olivet used two long touchdown passes from junior quarterback Lane Porter to stretch its lead to 19-0. The first went to sophomore Jacob Jodway from 45 yards out on the first play of the Comets' opening drive of the second quarter. The second one covered 39 yards to senior Kornelius Saxton.
  • The Bluejays made the score 19-7 at halftime on a one-yard touchdown run by Orlando Hernandez.
  • Elmhurst forced Olivet to a three-and-out on its first series of the second half. The Bluejays scored on their possession to make the score 19-14 at the 9:22 mark of the third quarter.
  • There was no more scoring until the fourth quarter when senior Jerome Washington broke loose for a 19-yard touchdown run on a third down play with 8:17 left. Pollard made the PAT kick to make the score 26-14.
  • The Bluejays cut their deficit to 26-20 on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Hernandez to Matt Brachmann.
  • Olivet got the ball back with 6:06 left in the game. The Comets were able to get two first downs before turning the ball over on downs with 1:41 showing on the clock.
  • Elmhurst used three passing first downs to get down to the Comet 22-yard line. One final pass attempt was broken up by senior Walter Love III in the end zone.

FOR THE COMETS

  • Olivet recorded 301 yards of offense.
  • Washington led the ground game with 28 carries for 119 yards.
  • Porter completed 13-of-21 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Saxton caught eight passes for 97 yards.
  • Senior Chase Cavric led the defense with seven tackles, including six solo stops.
  • Love III tallied six tackles.

FOR THE BLUEJAYS

  • Elmhurst finished the game with 298 yards, 201 through the air and 97 on the ground.
  • Hernandez was 16-of-31 passing the ball, and had 16 rushes for 56 yards.
  • Brachmann hauled in four passes for 74 yards.
  • Ben Holloway also had four receptions for 40 yards.
  • Mike Dicken collected four solo and four assisted tackles.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Saxton is now Olivet's all-time leader for pass receptions with 143.
