OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Junior Dan Williams was 23-41 passing for 247 yards and four touchdowns as Stevenson downed King's 38-9 in Middle Atlantic Conference football Saturday afternoon at Mustang Stadium.
With the win, the Mustangs (1-1, 1-0 MAC) won their 13th straight game in the month of September and were victorious in their fifth straight home opener. It also marked the fourth straight win over King's (1-1, 0-1 MAC).
Williams threw touchdown passes to three different receivers, with senior Preston Addo catching two touchdown passes and classmates Devin Salisbury and Dequan Ellison each grabbing one. Salisbury tied his own single-game school mark with 11 catches for 67 yards, while Addo caught seven passes for 132 yards. Ellison finished with five receptions on the afternoon for 71 yards.
Junior Jainard Crawley-Lambert rushed 15 times for 94 yards for Stevenson, including a 32-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Stevenson needed just 11 seconds to take a 7-0 lead as on the opening kickoff, the Mustangs recovered a fumble. Junior Gradi Tshilombo knocked the ball out of Marquis Miller's hands and Salisbury recovered at the Monarch 13. A slant-route completion from Williams to Addo on the game's first play made it 7-0.
The Mustangs extended their lead to 14-0 after one quarter as an Ellison 23-yard TD reception with 18 seconds left capped a five-play, 63-yard drive that was aided by a pair of 15-yard penalties on the guests. Stevenson extended its lead to 21-0 at the 6:11 mark of the second quarter when a 33-yard completion from Williams to Addo finished a seven-play, 74-yard match down the field.
A 61-yard interception return for a touchdown by sophomore Zach May with 4:50 left in the second quarter increased Stevenson's lead to 28-0. After not recording an interception for the first time since 2014 in last week's opener, the Mustangs had two picks, with junior DJ Broxton recording one in the fourth quarter at the King's 6.
Stevenson's final touchdown came on its first drive of the third quarter, as Salisbury caught up to a ball thrown to the back of the end zone by Williams from eight yards out to make it 35-0. The Monarchs recorded their lone touchdown on the ensuing drive, going 65 yards in 10 plays to make it 35-7 with 9:58 to go in the third.
A 19-yard field goal by freshman Ian Gould with 1:11 to go in the fourth quarter closed out the Stevenson scoring.
King's quarterback Zach Whitehead was 28-44 passing for 212 yards, with Miller catching 11 balls for 68 yards. Stevenson outgained the Monarchs 400-312 and won the turnover battle, as it had three takeaways while not committing a turnover. It marks the 46th straight game Stevenson has had at least one takeaway.
Junior Ashton Leschke totaled 12 tackles for the Mustangs, including 1.5 tackles for a loss, while sophomore Kobe Bolanos had 11 stops. Senior Cory Pietrzyk finished with three tackles for a loss, including a pair of sacks, and added seven tackles. Broxton also broke up two passes in addition to his interception while May also recorded a pass breakup.
Stevenson is back in action next Saturday when it travels to FDU-Florham for a noon Middle Atlantic Conference game.
