Trinity Football Wins at Bowdoin

More news about: Trinity (Conn.)

Brunswick, Maine - The Trinity College Bantams continued to roll with a 38-7 triumph at Bowdoin College this afternoon in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) football action at Whittier Field.  Trinity improved to 5-0, setting up a match-up of the last two undefeated teams in the league next Saturday in Hartford, while the Polar Bears drop to 0-5.  Junior QB Sonny Puzzo (West Caldwell, N.J.) ran for two touchdowns, as the Bantam offense was fueled by their rushing game and timely passing. Junior WR Bryan Vieira (Hull, Mass.) was Puzzo's main target, ending the day with 99 receiving yards on four catches.

Trinity took the opening kickoff and marched down the field for a game-opening touchdown, using tailback Max Chipouras six times on an 11-play, 64-yard drive. Chiporas split the Bowdoin defense from six yards out to cap the drive and give the Bantams a 7-0 lead. After the teams traded possessions, the Bantams doubled their lead with an eight-play, 56-yard drive highlighted by a 34-yard pass from Sonny Puzzo to Bryan Viera that put the ball inside the Bowdoin 5.  Puzzo plunged in from one yard out to make it 14-0.

Eric Sachse made it a 17-0 contest with a 40-yard field goal early in the second quarter and then, following a Bowdoin three-and-out, Trinity moved 65 yards in six plays, scoring on a 19 yard strike from Puzzo to Viera. The Bantams added one last score before the half, capping an eight-play, 66-yard drive with a Puzzo scramble from three yards out to give the visitors a 31-0 edge at the break.

Bowdoin took the opening kickoff of the second half and mounted their best drive of the day, covering 77 yards in nine plays for a touchdown. After converting on a fourth down at midfield, Tim Drakeley found Liam Ford for 33 yards to move the ball deep into Trinity territory. Two plays later Drakeley found Ejaaz Jiu in the back corner for his first collegiate touchdown reception that trimmed the lead to 31-7. Trinity added a fourth-quarter score on a 15-yard touchdown pass from David Ryan to Will Connery to round out the scoring in the 38-7 final.

Trinity racked up 456 yards of total offense, but totaled 246 yards rushing in the win.  Chipouras finished with 84 yards rushing on 17 carries,  mostly in the first half, while Lucas Golon ended with 112 yards on the ground on 14 carries, mostly in the second half for the Bantams. Sonny Puzzo went 10-17 for 181  yards and a passing touchdown while also rushing for 22 yards and two scores. The Trinity defense had three sacks, held Bowdoin to 58 yards rushing and just 11 first downs in the contest. Bowdoin was led offensively by Drakeley, who went 10-21 for 132 yards passing and a touchdown. He found Liam Ford a game-high seven times for 84 yards. Nate Richam rushed 12 times for Bowdoin for 48 yards. Joe Gowetski made a game-high 14 tackles for the Polar Bears while Nadim Elhage recorded six tackles, including three for a loss, and a sack.
