William Paterson Football Falls in Season Finale at No. 25/20 Wesley

More news about: William Paterson

DOVER, DEL. – The William Paterson football team (2-8, 1-8 NJAC) scored the first 14  points of the game, but saw its season come to an end with a 59-14 loss at No. 25/20 Wesley (8-2, 8-1 NJAC) Nov. 12.

A pair of 19-yard completions set up a two-yard carry by junior quarterback James Waldron (Edison, N.J./Edison) and a PAT by sophomore Nick DeAngelis (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey), making it a 7-0 Pioneer lead 4:04 into the contest.

A pair of third-down conversions and a two-yard rush by Cahsim Henry (Lindenwold, N.J./Lindenwold) on fourth-and-two kept the next WP drive alive, and Waldron capped it off with a two-yard score on third-and-goal. DeAngelis kicked the extra point and William Paterson was ahead by a 14-0 count with 1:16 remaining in the first quarter.

The Wolverines responded with a 47-yard pass play from junior quarterback Nick Falkenberg to sophomore wide receiver Alex Kemp, pulling Wesley to within seven at 14-7 12 seconds before the end of the opening period.

Falkenberg and Kemp connected again, this time for 43 yards, to tie the game at 14-14 three minutes into the second quarter. Seniors Bryce Shade and Jamar Baynard then added rushing touchdowns of 14 (21-14, 6:34) and one (28-14, 3:56) yards, respectively.

The Pioneers recovered a fumbled punt at the Wesley-8, but an interception in the end zone gave the Wolverines the ball back at their own 20-yard line. Falkenberg converted the turnover into points with a 27-yard strike to Kemp, pushing Wesley's lead to 35-14 with 14 seconds to play during the first half.

The Wolverines took the opening drive of the second half 55 yards, finished off by a 14-yard pass by Falkenberg to Baynard (42-14, 13:15). Wesley later recovered a fumble inside the WP-25 and got an 18-yard scoring pass from Falkenberg to senior tight end Tory Robinson to extend its lead to 49-14 midway through the third quarter.

Wesley turned an interception into three points thanks to an Eric Speidel 29-yard field goal (52-14, 1:29), and sophomore quarterback Khaaliq Burroughs tacked on a one-yard carry early in the fourth period (59-14, 10:33).

Waldron went 11-for-29 for 170 yards and three interceptions, and scored twice on 13 carries for 29 yards. Henry rushed 15 times for 60 yards, and senior wide receiver Malcolm Robinson (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) caught six passes for 112 yards.

Senior defensive back Pat Moran (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) made a game-best 12 tackles, and junior linebacker Charles Faulkner (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) posted 11 stops. Sophomore linebacker Tyler Gross (Pomona, N.Y./North Rockland) added two pass breakups to his nine tackles.

Falkenberg finished 19-for-24 for 285 yards and five touchdowns. Baynard had one TD and 83 yards on 15 attempts, and Kemp hauled in eight passes for 170 yards and three scores.

Junior linebacker Samer Manna collected 10 tackles, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for Wesley. Junior defensive tackle Stephen Yorkman and junior cornerback DaJahn Lowery each contributed five stops.
