Strong Second Half Leads Tiger Football Past Texas Lutheran

More news about: Trinity (Texas)

San Antonio - The Trinity football team scored 21 second-half points to beat Texas Lutheran University 28-27 Saturday in a come-from-behind Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory.

GAME SUMMARY

Texas Lutheran opened the scoring with a touchdown on its first drive of the game, but the Tigers answered immediately with a score of their own to tie the game. The two-yard rush by quarterback Davis King proved to be the final score of the first half for Trinity.

Including the opening drive, the Bulldogs scored on four straight possessions to start the game, and took a 20-7 lead into halftime.

Trinity capped a 71-yard scoring drive to make it a 20-14 game with Griffin Lay's 13-yard rush to start the fourth quarter, but Texas Lutheran drove 73 yards on 12 plays for a touchdown to pull back in front by two scores.

Early in the fourth quarter, Rhodes Legg caught a 10-yard touchdown from Justin Ventura to cut the lead to 27-21, and after a quick three-and-out by the Bulldogs, Trinity was back in business again.

Trinity chewed up 5:25 off the clock for a nine-play, 64-yard drive that put the Tigers ahead for the first time in the game, at 28-27.  King scored on a one-yard quarterback sneak for the winning score.

The Tiger defense held on the final two possessions by the Bulldogs, snagging an interception on fourth down to end the final drive with under two minutes to play.

Trinity sealed the win with a first down run on fourth-and-three in the final seconds, denying the Bulldogs the chance for a desperation play at the end.

NOTABLES

Trinity improved its overall record to 4-4, and 2-2 in the SCAC. Texas Lutheran dropped to 2-6 and 2-2.

Texas Lutheran had won the last four outings against Trinity, including a 38-28 win earlier this season. The Tigers now lead the series 17-13 with Saturday's win.

After allowing a 73-yard scoring drive to start the second half, Trinity's defense did not allow a single first down the rest of the game, which covered four Texas Lutheran drives.  The Tigers held the Bulldogs to five total yards over those four drives.

Davis King's two rushing touchdowns were the first of his career with the Tigers.  He has also thrown for two scores this season.

Griffin Lay led all players with 80 yards rushing on 17 carries, including his second touchdown of the season.

Zach Trevino finished with 11 carries for 49 yards rushing, as well as a team-best 39 yards receiving on four catches.

Rhodes Legg hauled in four receptions for 39 yards, including his fourth touchdown of the season - tying for the team lead.

Adam Saunders returned five kickoffs for a total of 125 yards in the game, giving him 543 kickoff return yards this season.  He is now tied for seventh on Trinity's all-time list in return yards with nearly 700 in his career.

Luke Packard recorded a pair of sacks to give him 12.0 for the season, and finished with a total of 10 tackles in the game.  Packard is now second in school history for single-season sacks, trailing only All-American John Tobola's total of 12.5 sacks in 1993.

Packard is also just three sacks from tying the career record of 25.5 sacks set by Jarrod Smith from 2000-03.

Julian Turner chalked up nine tackles, and now has 274 in his career, which moves him into ninth all-time among Tiger football players.
