FOREST GROVE, Ore. - For the third year in a row, the match-up between the University of Dubuque Spartans vs. Pacific University Boxers has given the fans a reason to not leave their seats until the final whistle. UD jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead after the first quarter. The host Boxers bit their way back into the game to grab the lead at halftime 24-14. UD cut into the lead in the third 21-24 before taking a lead late on a 4th and 12 yard play.
UD scored on a 43 yard pass 28-24 with under two minutes to play. The Boxers used the sideline and moved the ball quickly up the field. With seconds remaining, UD incurred a pass interference penalty in the endzone, when the Boxers tossed a touchdown pass, only to have it reversed on an offensive pass interference call, pushing the hosts back to the 17 yard line. The Spartans with seven seconds remaining forced the Boxer offense into two incomplete passes to end their chances with the cardiac Spartans capturing the road victory 28-24.
HERO Sports Hero of the Week, quarterback Conor Feckley would finish the night 20-42 attempts for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Najee Toomer was his favorite target with eight catches for 137 yards. On the ground, the Spartans pounded the ball 35 times for a tough 92 yards against a staunch Boxer defense. Conner O'Malley punted seven times for 262 yards, an average of 37.4 yds. Le'Devin Smith led the defense with seven solo and two assisted tackles. Derek Trotter finished with five solos and three assisted tackles.
The Spartans improve to 2-0 and have stretched out their undefeated regular season game win streak to 10 games. UD will host the Simpson College Storm next Saturday, Sept. 17 on Chalmers Field at 1:00 p.m.
