Washington, D.C. – Husson scored on its first five possessions Saturday and never looked back, as the Eagles defeated Gallaudet, 54-8 for their first ever win at Gallaudet in program history, in Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) action on Saturday Hotchkiss Field.
Husson (5-1, 4-0 ECFC) wins its eleventh-straight league game, while Gallaudet (0-6, 0-4 ECFC) loses its second-consecutive to the Eagles and falls to 3-5 in the series.
Running back John Smith ran in three scores during the opening stretch for the Eagles as he rushed for 135 yards on 18 carries. The Eagles' fifth score was setup after a Bison fumble on a kick return deep in Gallaudet territory. Two plays later, Husson quarterback Joe Seccareccia (7 of 11, 98 yards, three touchdowns) hit Jon Saban for a 28-yard score. Seccareccia added one more touchdown pass before halftime as the Eagles led 41-0.
Seccareccia's three passing touchdowns on day gives him 16 on the season for a new single-season record. He set the previous mark of 14 last season. Seccareccia also became the second Eagle player to be responsible for 40 or more career touchdowns and needs seven to pass Julius Williams for the most in program history.
Smith became the third Eagle player to surpass the 2,300 career rushing yard plateau and now has 2,361 the second most in program history and the fourth player to eclipse the 2,400 career all-purpose yard mark.
The Bison defense gave up a season-high 272 rushing yards on 60 carries, four rushing touchdowns and surrendered 54 points.
Gallaudet showed some flashes during the game as the Bison marched 51 yards on 11 plays on its second possession before turning the ball over on downs at the Husson 20. In the fourth quarter, the Bison marched 46 yards on seven plays and got to the Husson 6 before quarterback Ramon Johnson had two incomplete passes as Gallaudet came away from the red-zone with no points.
Husson fumbled the ball back to Gallaudet when Bobby Green Jr. recovered the loose ball at the Husson 6 with 2:17 left in the game.
Austin Hundley ran the ball three times and on the last handoff he dove into the end zone for the lone touchdown of the game for the Bison. Johnson then completed the two-point conversion pass to Lawrence Watson as he held on with defenders draped on him.
On special teams, freshman Grant Getz used his 6-foot-6 frame to block three extra-point kicks by Husson.
Carneilus Smith and Richard Harty led the Bison defense with 15 tackles each. Louie Akuffo (Bowie, Md.) added 11 tackles along with junior Jacy Pedersen.
The fifth ranked Husson defense was led by Jean Gabriel and Bryant Wade, as both collected six tackles on the day. Wade added 2 tackles for loss for 9 yards. Christian Mowrer and Matt Pellerin each clipped in with 5 tackles apiece. Josh Lovins had an interception and return it 27 yards for the pick six.
Husson returns home to Winkin Sports Complex next weekend to host SUNY-Maritime on Saturday, October 31st for 12:00 p.m. kickoff. The Bison will hit the road next weekend and travel to Massachusetts to face Becker in a conference game on Saturday, Oct. 31, at noon.
