SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 24, 2015) – Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre scored early and often Saturday, as the visiting Colonels earned a 35-7 victory over the Sewanee football team at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
After the Colonels received the opening kickoff, Centre got on the board with less than two minutes off the clock. Tailback Nolan Coulter capped off a six-play, 43-yard drive that took only 1:42 with a 19-yard touchdown run.
After Sewanee went three-and-out on its first possession, Centre went back to work from its 27-yard line. Back-to-back big plays from Coulter and quarterback Heath Haden put the ball at the Sewanee 27-yard line. Three plays later, Centre had the ball first-and-goal for the Tiger six. On the ensuing play, Coulter fumbled which was recovered by Sewanee's Will Easley at the seven-yard line.
Unfortunately, the Tiger momentum would not last long. On the next play from scrimmage, Sewanee's Kalon Johnson was hit by Ben Bostick at the six-yard line. Johnson then fumbled the ball, which bounced into the end zone where Centre's Alex Mattingly recovered for a touchdown.
On the ensuing Sewanee drive, the Tigers lost the ball again with another fumble on their first play. A play later, Haden extended the Centre lead with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Duncan Mercer.
The Colonels went ahead 28-0 late in the second quarter as Haden completed a one-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Kamp in the front corner of the end zone. That fourth down score was after Sewanee's defense stopped the Colonels on three straight running plays from inside the four-yard line.
Centre then closed the first half with one more touchdown as reserve quarterback Devon Hayes completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Colin Bradley on a beautiful run post route.
Sewanee got on the board late in the game, as freshman Allan Parrott completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to Steven Hearn on a fade pattern in the corner of the end zone.
Overall, Centre finished with 414 yards of total offense. That included 132 passing yards by Haden. The Colonels also had three running backs with at least 50 yards and nine different receivers that had at least one catch.
Parrott led Sewanee with 91 total yards and touchdown. Hearn finished with 42 receiving yards and touchdown. That extended his touchdown streak to three straight games.
Defensively, Centre limited Sewanee to 217 yards of total offense. The Colonels forced three turnovers, had three sacks, and eight tackles for a loss.
Safety Alex Mattingly led Centre with seven tackles and one forced fumble.
Tiger sophomore safety Glenn Ireland led Sewanee with nine stops, one tackle for a loss, and one pass break-up. Additionally, John Cleveland finished with three tackles and an interception. Cleveland also punted seven times for an average of 44.0 yards.
Centre has now won 10 straight games in the series.
Sewanee returns to action with a 1:00 p.m. SAA road game at Chicago next Saturday.
