DELAWARE VALLEY RUNS TO 26-10 VICTORY OVER KING'S
DOYLESTOWN -- Host Delaware Valley University used a potent rushing attack, amassing 391 yards on the ground as the Aggies posted a 26-10 victory over King's College Saturday night at James Work Memorial Stadium.
With the win, Delaware Valley improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the Middle Atlantic Conference while King's slipped to 1-3 and 1-2 in league play.
The Aggies established the run right form the start and got on the board first on their second possession. DeVonte Ellis took a hand-off and broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run at to give Delaware Valley the lead. Brendan Hanagan made good on the extra point to put the Aggies ahead 7-0 with 6:45 left in the first quarter.
The Monarchs responded with a 13-play, 77-yard drive which stalled at the Aggie five. King's, however, would get on the board with a 22-yard field goal by Mikhail Kniaziewicz to cut the score to 7-3 with 0:53 left in the first quarter to cap a 13-play, 77-yard drive.
Delaware Valley later countered with a seven-play, 49-yard drive after a Monarch punt. The drive was capped by a 17-yard touchdown run by Ellis at 12:43 of the second quarter. Hanagan added the point-after as the Aggies built a 14-3 lead.
Later in the half King's thwarted another Aggie drive when Jake Mannetti picked off Danny Farley at the King's 20 and returned the offering to the Aggie 49 with 5:10 left in the half.
The Monarchs took advantage and marched the length of he field, aided by a 14-yard pass from Zach Whitehead to Marquis Miller at the Aggie three. Three plays later Hehre scrambled for a two-yard touchdown run with 0:12 left in the half. Kniaziewicz made good on the extra point to cut the lead to 14-10.
The Aggies amassed 202 total yards of offense at the break, compared to 165 by the Monarchs.
The Aggies stretched the lead midway through the third quarter after taking over at their own 15 following a King's punt. On first down, back-up quarterback DeShawn Darden broke free on a freeze-option keeper and raced 85 yards untouched to the end zone. King's Matt Demarco would block the extra-point but Delaware Valley took a 20-10 lead with 6:18 left in the third period.
The Aggies came up with a big defensive play when Tom Hehre fumbled and the Aggies recovered at the King's 24. On first down Armani Fuller-Williams broke free off right tackle and into the end zone for another Aggie score. The extra-point failed but Delaware Valley took a 26-10 lead with 10:09 left in the contest.
King's twice reached the Aggie red zone in the fourth quarter but came away without any points, turning the ball over on downs.
The Aggies amassed 479 yards of total offense, compared to 276 for King's. Delaware Valley also rushed for 391 yards on the day. Ellis finished with 157 yards on just nine carries with three touchdowns, averaging 17.4 yards per-attempt. Darden followed with 98 yards on six attempts, averaging 16.3 yards each carry.
For King's, the Monarchs, Hehre completed 25-of-39 passes for 222 yards. Mike Palmer caught seven passes for 75 yards while Demarco added six for 49 yards.Marquis Miller chipped in with five catches for 51 yards Gabe Brown led the ground game with 36 yards on 14 carries as the Monarchs gained only 28 yards on 30 attempts.
