R-MC Amases 701 Yards of Total Offense in Outscoring Averett

More news about: Randolph-Macon

DANVILLE, Va. – The Yellow Jacket offense rolled up what is believed to be a school-record 701 yards of total offense and freshman quarterback Joseph Vairo (Coral Springs, Fla./Westminster Academy) broke the school record with 445 yards of total offense as the Randolph-Macon football team posted a 49-28 victory at Averett Saturday evening.

The Yellow Jackets evened their record at 1-1, while the Cougars fell to 0-2.

R-MC registered 325 yards on the ground and 376 through the air. Vairo completed 16 of 25 passes for 361 yards and three touchdowns. He carried the ball 16 times for 84 yards and scored three TDs on the ground.

The previous record for total offense was 419, set by Hunter Price against Washington and Lee in 2001.

The Yellow Jackets took the opening kickoff and drove 72 yards in seven plays, capped by a Vairo 27-yard TD run to give the visitors a 7-0 lead.

Vairo hit freshman Christian Redman (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) on a 74-yard scoring strike with 5:38 remaining in the second quarter to give R-MC a 14-0 lead. Following a fumble recovery, freshman Eric Hoy (Clayton, N.C./Clayton) pulled in a 43-yard TD pass from Vairo to give the Yellow Jackets a 21-0 advantage. Averett recorded a touchdown with 1:51 left in the half to make it 28-7. Vairo scored on another 27-yard run to give R-MC a 28-7 lead at intermission.

The Cougars picked up a pair of TDs early in the third quarter to make it a one-score game at 28-21. Vairo scored on a nine-yard run with 11:02 left in the third period to push the advantage to 35-21. Averett again found the end zone to make it 35-28 with 8:59 left in the third stanza.

Junior Dom Kaopua (Fredericksburg, Va./Chacellor) scored on a one-yard run late in the third quarter to give R-MC a 42-28 lead. Hoy caught a 15-yard scoring pass from Vairo late in the game to make the final 49-28.

Hoy finished with 12 catches for 240 yards and two scores. It was the second-highest total for receiving yards in a game in program history and the most for a freshman. It was also the seventh-highest total in ODAC history. Earl Peoples owns the school record for receiving yards with 295 yards against Washington and Lee in 2009. It was the most receptions for a Yellow Jacket in a game since Peoples pulled in 17 against Shenandoah in 2010.

Junior John Byrd (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) rushed 25 times for 129 yards.

Senior linebacker Tom Buchanan (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) led the defense with nine total tackles and seven solo stops. He recorded three tackles for loss, including one quarterback sack. Junior safety Marcus Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) had seven tackles, six solo stops, two tackles for loss and one quarterback sack.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 19, with a 1 p.m. contest at Methodist.
