CARLISLE, Pa.—The 16th-ranked Hobart College football team earned its 31st consecutive regular season victory with a 29-7 win at Dickinson College this afternoon. The Statesmen piled up 400 yards of offense and yielded just 97, carrying a shutout into the final minute.
The defense prevented the Red Devils (0-1) from getting on track, keeping the home team from gaining any yards in the first half (-5 rushing, 5 passing) and a mere 8 yards through three quarters (3-5). Six of Dickinson's first eight possessions resulted in negative yards. Hobart (1-0) posted eight tackles for loss, including five sacks, on the day.
Senior linebacker Jacob Stanley notched a team-high seven tackles, including 2.5 for loss and two sacks. Sophomore cornerback Tommy D'Antonio also made seven stops. Senior linebacker Trayvon Toney registered five tackles, including two for loss and a sack. Junior defensive end Zach Thorntonadded four tackles, 1.5 for loss, and an interception.
On offense, Statesman sophomore quarterback Shane Sweeney was 20-of-28 passing for 226 yards and a touchdown in his first collegiate start. It's the most passing yards by a Hobart quarterback making his first start since Nick Strang '13 threw for 405 yards against Union in 2010. Sweeney also scored a rushing touchdown on a 1-yard keeper that put the Statesmen up 14-0 with 6:31 left in the first quarter.
Junior Jack Pfohl pulled in a game-high six passes for a game-high 86 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown just before halftime. Coupled with sophomore Will McCool's 32-yard field goal earlier in the frame, Hobart carried a 23-0 lead into halftime.
On the ground, senior running back Conner Hartigan produced a game-high 73 yards on 15 carries. First-year Tynard Barfield took just four handoffs, but gained 44 yards, scoring from 29 yards out midway through the fourth quarter. Senior fullback Christopher Holoman opened the day's scoring, taking his only touch 27 yards to the house.
Dickinson, which managed just nine first downs on the day, produced 68 yards and five first downs on its final possession, scoring on a 3-yard pass from Ricky Klingerman to Darrion Bunce with just 10 seconds remaining in the contest.
The Red Devils got a game-high 11 tackles for senior defensive back Jake Myers.
Hobart will make its 2015 Boswell Field debut on Saturday, Sept. 12, when the Statesmen host Endicott College. Kickoff is scheduled for noon. The Gulls (0-1) are led by former Statesman Kevin DeWall '00.
