Alfred State head football coach Mick Caba will retire at the end February. Caba is the longest tenured (15 years) and winningest football coach in program history (66 wins).
Caba came to Alfred State in the spring of 2000. He led the Pioneers to their first winning season in 2000, helped Alfred State to a 7-4 record in 2003, led the team to a Region III Championship in 2011, coached the program's first NFL player (Rod Streater - Oakland Raiders), coached seven NJCAA All-Americans, and in the last two years as a member of Division III of the NCAA he coached 17 All-USCAA players.
During his time at Alfred State, Caba was was named the Northeast Football Conference Coach of the Year (2005) and was inducted into the National Junior College Athletic Association Football Hall of Fame (2012) for his 16 years of coaching in the NJCAA.
Caba was an integral part in the planning and building of Pioneer Stadium which brought football games onto campus for the first time in 2009. He also served as the interim athletic director in the summer of 2011.
Alfred State athletic director Kelly Higgins stated: "We are thankful and appreciative for what Mick has done for the football program. He has grown the program over the years and transitioned the program into Division III of the NCAA. We congratulate him on a outstanding coaching career."
Prior to arriving at Alfred State, Caba coached at Inver Hills Community College (Minneapolis, MN), Minnesota-Morris, Panhandle State and Iowa Wesleyan. Overall, Caba has won 102 games.
A national search for a new head football coach will begin immeadiately with the hopes of having a new person in place early this spring. Offensive coordinator Anthony Scott and defensive coordinator Michael Caba will serve as the primary contacts for the program during the search.
