CLAREMONT, Calif. – Scoring at least a touchdown in each quarter, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps football team earned their first SCIAC win beating La Verne 40-24 for their Homecoming game on Zinda Field.
At halftime, three of last year's seniors: Kris Otterholt, Greg Wilson and Joey Liekweg (Ugo Nwasike was unable to attend) were presented with the new "Battle of Sixth Street" trophy for the CMS and Pomona-Pitzer rivalry game. Read more about the trophy here.
While La Verne went to a passing game, CMS earned most of their yardage by running the football. The Stags rushed for 312 yards with 232 passing yards. The Leos only rushed for 75 and passed for 355 yards.
The Stags scored in all six times they entered the red-zone. Freshman running back Andrew Segre ran it in for three touchdowns, getting those last few yards when the team needed it. Sophomore running back Nick Gott ran for over 100 yards just in the first half and ended up with 173 yards on the game. Gott ignited the offense with a 54 yard run in the Stags' first possession, resulting in a touchdown three plays later.
Freshman Shane Pico ran the ball on four different occasions but had to come out due to an ankle injury in the first half.
Junior defensive back James Ingram intercepted one of William Livingston's 37 pass attempts late in the second quarter but without enough time on the clock for CMS to advance down the field.
Sophomore quarterback Trey Reynolds connected with six different receivers, each of them making at least a ten-yard play. Junior wide receiver Tyler Stanek caught six passes totaling 120 yards. Reynolds found freshman tight end Chris Cziesla just twice but one for 18 yards and a big first down and the other in the end zone to put the Stags up 13-7 at the beginning of the second quarter.
Junior linebacker A.J. Herrera had five solo tackles and four assists followed by sophomore defensive back Tiger Brown with five by himself.
The last time CMS scored 40 or more points was against Whittier in 2013 in a game that went to five overtime periods. The Stags were ultimately victorious 49-46 over the Poets.
With the win CMS is 2-2 overall, 1-1 in SCIAC. The Stags next play at Redlands (2-2, 2-0 SCIAC) at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18.
