Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team earned a convincing 24-0 victory over Allegheny College on a rain-filled Saturday afternoon at Savage Stadium.
With the victory, the Yeomen snapped a four-game losing skid and ran their record to 2-4 overall and 1-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Allegheny remains winless at 0-7 and 0-6 in league play.
It wasn't the prettiest game in the world as both teams were credited with four fumbles due in large part to the wet conditions. Allegheny lost just one, while Oberlin lost two. However, the Yeomen also came away with four interceptions in the shutout victory.
Focusing on the running attack, Oberlin rushed for 214 yards on 49 carries. Senior running back Moses Richardson led the way with 107 yards on 18 carries. It was his first 100-yard game of the season and fourth of his career. Quarterback Lucas Poggiali, who was an efficient 11-of-13 passing for 99 yards, rushed for two TDs in the win.
After both teams felt their way through the muddy conditions in the first quarter, the Yeomen were finally able to break through on their second possession of the second quarter. A 14-yard run by Richardson set the Yeomen up with a 1st-and-goal from the 5-yardline and from there Poggiali called his own number – faking a sweep to Richardson – before running straight up the middle of the field behind center Jim Adkins for the TD. The score capped an 11-play, 70-yard drive that took 5:52 off the clock.
Trailing 7-0 at the half, the Gators got the ball to start the second half, but Gabe Edwards intercepted Allegheny quarterback Jon Nigro on the very first play of the half. The Yeomen would convert the INT into a 32-yard field goal from Erickson Andrews. However, the kick could have been much more challenging for Andrews had Allegheny accepted a holding penalty on the previous play that would have made it 3rd-and-19 from the 25-yardline instead of 4th-and-9 from the 15-yardline.
On the ensuing Gators' drive they would turn it over once again as Zach Kisley deflected a Nigro pass that fell into the hands of Connor Jackson. It would prove to be the first of two Jackson INTs in the game.
Taking a 10-0 lead into the final quarter, Oberlin would start to seal away the victory early in the fourth quarter with one of their best drives of the season. Back-to-back Richardson runs for a total of 30 yards got things going and a late hit personal foul along with another 15-yard illegal participation penalty put the Yeomen in business. Three hard runs by Richardson setup a 1st-and-goal and again Poggiali would finish the job by running a bootleg to the nearside and scoring his second rushing touchdown from 3-yards out. The scored capped an 8-play, 85-yard drive that took 4:03 and effectively ended the game.
The Gators continued to fight, converting a fake punt to extend their drive into Yeomen territory, but nothing would come of it, as Kisley would intercept Nigro in the end zone for a touchback.
Following a 70-yard punt by Kisley, Allegheny would have one last chance, but after running the exact same quick-out play four times in a row, Jackson would step in front of Nigro's pass and take it 46 yards the other way for a Yeomen touchdown.
Jackson, a fifth-year senior who is playing his first season of Yeomen football, made the most of his first-career start. The former Oberlin lacrosse star from Berkley, California, finished with six tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass break-up to go along with two interceptions for 56 yards and a touchdown.
Kyle Kessler led the defensive unit with 10 total tackles and a forced fumble, while Kisley added four stops and a fumble recovery to go along with his second INT of the season.
Oberlin is back in action at home next Saturday and will have its toughest test of the season when 16th ranked Wabash College invades Savage Stadium for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Little Giants, who are a perfect 6-0 on the year, defeated Kenyon College today 48-7. However, last season Oberlin went on the road and upset then 10th ranked Wabash 31-16.
