Rollins runs for 219, three scores in McDaniel win over Moravian

More news about: McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the game's first 16:37 en route to a 21-14 Centennial Conference (CC) football victory over Moravian on Saturday.

Joe Rollins (Temple Hills, Md./Surrattsville) scored all three touchdowns for the Green Terror (1-1, 1-0 CC), who snapped a 13-game losing streak and gave head coach Mike Hoyt his first win as a head coach. Rollins rushed for 219 yards on 29 carries to move into second place on the program's all-time career list with 3,604 yards.

Mike Cousar (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) finished with 11 tackles and had an interception with 19.8 seconds left to seal the victory and allow his offense to go into victory formation for the first time in 686 days. James Price (Baltimore, Md./W.E.B. DuBois) and Nick Chuong (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) added seven stops each.

Robbie Moyer led the Greyhounds (0-2, 0-1 CC) with 117 yards rushing, including a touchdown, while also going 13-for-31 through the air for 96 yards. Chris Negron rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown.

After the opening kickoff went out of bounds, McDaniel took possession of the ball at its own 35-yard line.

After a Rollins three-yard run, Ryan Yamada (Brookeville, Md./Good Counsel) hit Jeff Worek (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) for another three years but a Moravian facemask penalty moved the ball into Greyhound territory.

On the next play, Rollins broke free down the far sideline for 44 yards and the touchdown 1:13 into the game, taking second place on the rushing list from Rob Johnson.

The defense forced a three-and-out before Sean Montgomery (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) started the next Green Terror series with a nine-yard gain on an end-around.

Rollins ripped off another 10 yards and Yamada found Nick O'Melia (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) for the first of his eight receptions, gaining 11 more yards.

Another 12-yard connection to O'Melia and a 25-yard strike to JT Kotowski (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) set up a first down at the Moravian 26.

After a five-yard pass to Aqil Tweedy (Fredericksburg, Va./Colonial Forge), Rollins broke free for a 21-yard touchdown and 14-0 lead with 7:11 to play in the first quarter.

A 25-yard run from Rollins before passes of nine yards to O'Melia and 13 yards to Mike Oliveto (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weiser) set up a first down at the Greyhound 15.

Rollins sprinted 15 yards on the next play to cap a 7-play, 73-yard march and stretch the lead to 21-0 just 1:37 into the second quarter.

The Green Terror marched deep into Moravian territory on its next two first-half possessions but turned the ball over on downs inside the three-yard line and Noah Miller came away with the first of three Greyhound interceptions to thwart another scoring attempt.

Taking the second half kickoff on its own 25 after a touchback to start the second half, Moravian methodically marched 75 yards on 12 plays in just 3:43 to get on the board. Moyer capped the series from a yard-and-a-half out on fourth-and-goal with 11:23 to play.

Taking over near midfield with 8:36 to play in the fourth quarter, the Greyhounds put together another methodical drive. This time it took 13 plays and 3:54 to move 55 yards before Negron found paydirt from two yards out with 4:46 to play.

Ed Bouye came up with Moravian's third pick, setting up his offense at the Green Terror 34-yard line with 3:42 on the clock.

Facing third-and-5, the McDaniel defense forced back-to-back incomplete passes to get the ball back with 2:46 remaining and the visitors out of timeouts.

Three Rollins runs netted just three yards, forcing Brett Haas (Laurel, Md./Atholton) to punt the ball away.

McDaniel ran the play clock all the way down before calling its final timeout with 36.1 seconds on the clock.

Out of the timeout, Haas unfurled the best of his five punts – all of which came in the second half – for 43 yards to give Moravian the ball at its own 38 with 29.4 seconds on the clock.

Moyer rolled right and heaved a ball downfield that was tipped up by his receiver and Cousar came down with the pass, dragging a foot to ensure he was inbounds and gave his offense the ball with 19.8 seconds showing at its own 26.

Hoyt sent his offense back on the field, where Yamada took the snap and dropped to a knee.

The Green Terror finished with 389 yards of total offense, including 266 on the ground.

McDaniel returns to action at Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
