UW-La Crosse Earns Second Straight Win

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team earned its second straight win with a 42-6 victory over Jamestown College (N.D.) Saturday afternoon at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 2-3 on the season while the Jimmies fall to 2-4. It was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Jamestown, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), took the opening kickoff, but fumbled on its second play from scrimmage. Lance Johansen fumbled with UW-L's Jake Meckstroth recovering the ball at the Jimmies' 29-yard line. Three plays later, Mike Butterfield hit Tony Bilderback with a 27-yard touchdown pass with 12:59 remaining in the first quarter. After Justin Huinker's extra-point, the Eagles led 7-0.

The Jimmies punted on their next possesion and the Eagles made it 14-0 as Butterfield scored on a 14-yard run with 9:50 left.

UW-L made it 16-0 with 7:35 remaining in the first period as a bad snap on a punt was covered in the endzone by Jamestown.

Huinker later gave UW-L a 19-0 lead wiht 2:43 remaining in the first quarter on a career-long 50-yard field goal. It is tied for the second-longest field goal in school history. Dewey Stendahl made a school record 51-yard field versus St. Norbert College (Wis.) during the 1969 season.

Johansen cut the lead to 19-6 with 11:46 left in the second quarter on a one-yard run. The extra-point attempt was blocked by Derek Dreher.  UW-L led 25-6 wiht 1:26 remaining in the half after Ben Hertrampf's 23-yard touchdown run. The Eagles led 25-6 at halftime.

On Jamestown's first possession of the second half, UW-L's Alex Barr returned a Jimmies' fumble 47-yards for a touchdown and 32-6 advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Huinker hit a 25-yard field goal with 12:59 remaining for a 35-6 lead and Jared Stan finished the scoring with a nine-yard touchdown run with 5:27 left to make it 42-6.

UW-L finished with 438 yards on offense, including 226 rushing and 212 passing. Hertrampf had 117 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown while Kevin Lindh had 64 yards on nine attempts and Stan 48 yards on eight carries with one touchdown.

Butterfield was 17-of-27 passing for 212 yards and one touchdown. Bilderback finished with six receptions for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Jamestown totaled 141 yards, including 20 rushing and 121 passing. Johansen had 34 yards rushing and a touchdown on 36 attempts. Brad Lint finished 19-of-30 for 109 yards. He was sacked three times. Matt Wilson had five receptions for 50 yards.

The Jimmies won the time of possession, 32:32 to 27:28, but finished four-of-15 on third-down. The Eagles were six-of-14 on third-down.

Jack Leahy led UW-L with 15 tackles, including 10 unassisted. He also had one sack as the Eagles led the Jimmies to 2.1 yards per play on offense. John Rozek had eight tackles while Ryan Immel and Meckstroth each finished with six. Immel and Donovan Winter also recorded a sack for UW-L.  The Eagles had 7.0 tackles for loss.

Andrew Hammond led Jamestown with eight tackles. He one quarterback sack and 3.0 tackles for loss. J.T. Petsch and Kenny Allen each finished with seven tackles.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, October 15 hosting UW-Eau Claire at 11:30 a.m. on Family, Friends & Alumni Weekend.
