Derrin Lamker, who has been coach for five seasons at Augsburg University, resigned from the job this week.
To be clear, Lamker is only out as the Augsburg coach. He had already made some waves last month when it was announced that he was going to simultaneously coach an area high school football team as well, his former squad at Osseo High School in Maple Grove, Minnesota. In 11 seasons there, from 2005 to 2015, he led the Orioles to three conference championships, two section titles and the Minnesota Class 6A state title in 2015. He had a 74-39 record at Osseo before being hired by Augsburg.
Holding two full-time jobs at the same time would likely be a problem for any employer, but in addition, there are restrictions as to when a Division III coach can talk to a high school student-athlete at an athletic competition, rules which would seem to make it functionally impossible to hold both jobs at the same time.
Lamker was 21-20 in five seasons as head coach of the Auggies.
"We thank Derrin Lamker for his passion, service and devotion to his alma mater, and the positive impact he's had for all his student-athletes that he has coached," said Jeff Swenson, whose term as athletic director at Augsburg ends on May 31.
"I want to thank all the alumni, current players and former players for making my six years at Augsburg some of the best of my life," Lamker said. "I want to thank Jeff Swenson for the opportunity and the mentorship. I truly wish Augsburg the best moving forward."
Lamker is an Augsburg University Athletic Hall of Fame member and was the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's most valuable player in 1997 as a quarterback for the Auggies. He was also a three-year starter on the Augsburg men's basketball team and played two seasons of baseball for the Auggies.
