Rochester football coach Scott Greene has announced that the 2017 season will be his final year on the sideline.
Greene has served as Rochester's head coach since 2006. His career record heading into this Saturday's Liberty League game against Union is 50-60. He is third in career coaching wins behind Elmer Burnham (17 years, 1944-60, 82 wins) and Peter 'Pat' Stark (15 years, 1969-83, 69 wins). Rochester dipped to 1-8, 0-7 in the Liberty League last season after seven seasons of winning either four or five games.
"The University of Rochester has been home for me and my family for the past 12 years," Greene said. "I am fortunate to have experienced such an outstanding university that put the students' needs and priorities for success before all else."
Since 2006, Rochester football players have earned a total of seven Academic All-America honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America. "To have such smart players to coach with their passion and love for the game is what I admired about being the head coach at U of R," Greene continued.
From the spring of 2011 through the spring of 2017, 38 Rochester players have been named to the Hampshire Honor Society as announced by the National Football Foundation. Honorees must achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher through their four years. In 2014, Rochester had 13 honorees, the most of any college in the nation. The HHS team that year totaled 838 athletes from 267 schools on all levels of football.
He took over as head coach in May 2006. He immediately led Rochester to back to back postseason appearances in 2006 and 2007.
"We are deeply grateful to Scott for the 12 years that he has led our football program. He cares deeply about his players, and has earned their respect and support," said executive director of athletics George VanderZwaag. "He has also been a great colleague in our department. We will miss having him part of our daily lives, but wish him well as he pursues new professional opportunities. We will be conducting a search for a new head coach at the end of the season, and look forward to a bright future for Rochester football."
"The personal support that George VanderZwaag provided to me since my first year as an assistant under Mark Kreydt was immeasurable," Greene said. "The facilities that have been created are the best in the country at many levels."
Rochester is 2-3 this year, 0-1 in the Liberty League.
